I wanted to download some home movies and do some editing and place them on the internet. I find out that Windows movie maker is good for that but they say a firewire is needed, 1eee1394 being one they recommend. As far as I can find out, a firewire is just a larger or faster input to the computer. If I use a USB port or a firewire port, after it gets uploaded, it's out of the picture isn't it? My question is, is it really necessary to have a firewire card?

IMHO you're correct. Anything on your hard disk should be accessable to a properly written program, and how you get it onto the disk is immaterial. The program should handle getting the subject into memory where it's worked upon.
