I have ms windows xp sp2 and have been told Microsoft firewall and norton internet security firewall will cause my computer to crash. The programs I use are slow, and the past few nights I could not turn off the computer.
    Had to do it manually.

I used adware before the trouble started. Which firewall should I disable, Microsoft or Norton? My experience with the registry is nil.

    Appreciate your help.

The Windows Firewall only protects against incoming traffic but the outbound traffic is not monitored.

The Norton Firewall works both ways and is to be preferred. A prerequisite is that it is up-to-date.

You disable the Windows Firewall in Controlpanel > Windows Firewall.

I run both- XP & Norton's firewall. Just because "someone told you it would make your computer crash" is no reason to disable security protection. If it is running slowly, there could be a number of possible problems.

Before you shut anything off, run some diagnostics.
    RAV virus scan
    Spybot spyware scan

    SFC System File Check:
    Start> Run> cmd
    sfc/ scannow
The computer refusing to shut down normally would likely be a software (i.e. spyware) issue, and not a firewall.

ps Christer is right. Any reputable firewall is better than XP's, but XP firewall is better than nothing.

    Firewall conflict

Thank you for the prompt response to my question. I removed the Ad aware program and all the problems disappeared.

Still not sure what to do about 2 firewalls. Opinions vary. Will continue to search.
