I've had the ancient Kerio Firewall 2.1.5 on my computer for some years now. I didn't change to a 'modern' one because I was still pleased with the firewall's performance. Today, after several recommendations, I decided to change over to the Sygate firewall. I downloaded and installed it and then proceeded to uninstall Kerio.

I used Perfect Uninstaller until I reached the 'Finish' point. Unfortunately I then started to receive windows alerts saying that some DLL in Kerio couldn't be found. I then tried add/remove in Windows Control Panel and deleted Kerio from there. All entries in add/remove and Perfect Uninstaller relating to Kerio disappeared BUT the program still remained and started up when I rebooted. To make matters worse, the alerts relating to Kerio persisted and wouldn't go away. Web pages failed to open and things felt messed up.

I solved the difficulty by restoring my computer to a point four hours earlier, but am now wary about trying to uninstall Kerio again. Has anyone advice on how to avoid the former disaster? Should I have uninstalled it before installing the Sygate firewall? Thank you.

That would be the usual practice.

I would try Comodo rather than Sygate.

In this instance it didn't work, as Perfect Uninstaller didn't either. They SAID that they did and the removal of the entries in the programs indicated that they were successful. However, the Old Firewall started up again when I rebooted - with continuous alerts warning me that a Kerio dll could not be found.

    Thanks.

RevoUninstaller tries to use any uninstaller packaged with the firewall but can't find it. It won't go any further. At least it didn't mess my computer up.

Try Add\Remove again, remove whatever possible. then....

    Download OTL to your Desktop.

    * Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    * Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    drivers32 /all
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\*.wt
    %systemroot%\system32\*.ruy
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.com
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.tmp
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    /md5start
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2help.dll /md5
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

    * Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

Thanks for that. I'll follow your instructions tomorrow when I'm not so tired and get back to you then. Here's hoping for success!:)

Just before logging off I decided that I'd try the add/remove process in Windows once again.

When I clicked on the 'remove' button I got the message 'an installation support file could not be installed'. I then thought that perhaps if I installed the program again that the required file might be reinstalled. I closed down the firewall and installed it anew. I then went into add/remove and tried to uninstall the firewall. The uninstaller proceeded with its task and Kerio was removed. The only thing left in Programs Files is the Kerio folder with two items 'filter.log - text document (33,300kb)' and 'filter.log.idx'(800kb). Should I just delete these?

I'm re-booting now so hopefully all will be well. I'll get back with the results later.
