    Hi.

I've been running Sygate for a long long time. Works great and just what I was looking for.

I would uninstall Sygate completely, including deleting the directory where it is installed after it is uninstalled. There's always some left overs there that prevents the directory from being deleted.
After it is uninstalled and the directory is deleted, reboot.

Download Sygate again (either the old one or the new one, doesn't really matter). Then install Sygate and change the default directory to something else. That will render all the entries in the registry useless and start you all over again. It should work fine after you authorize the program that access the internet.

I never allow any of my programs to update automatically. I always check around to see if there are any problems with the upgrade then I download the upgrade and install it myself. That way I know I have a good download to install.

Don't forget to let us know how you made out.

    Hello giles,

Good advice, however, some precautions. Un-installing firewalls is a tricky business.

I use Sygate on XP and have never had occasion to un-install it. Use ZoneAlarm on 9X, have un-installed/re-installed a number of times; if not done correctly, currupts the re-install! Zone Labs posts how-to instructions on thier web site. Sygate may well do the same.

Stongly reccomend going to the Sygate Forum or looking for un-install instructions from Sygate.

    Regards - Charles

True, true. However, Sygate provides an uninstall. You'll find it in your original Sygate install icons on the Start\Programs (or where you moved it to). If you can't find it, just go to Start\Settings\Control Panel\Add or Remove Programs. Go down the list until you get to Sygate and click on it. Windows knows where the uninstall is.
Don't forget to delete the Sygate folder when the uninstall is done. You'll be up and running in no time.

Have to jump in for a sec and ask you all something. I'm getting a new computer here any day now and I've recently gotten cable modem. LOVE IT! Tiny Personal Firewall was recommended to me and I've been using it. It seems to be doing it's job, but I heard somewhere that there were no more upgrades or updates to this firewall and am considering finding another (free) firewall. I've heard that Sygate was a pretty good one. Is it? It sounds like there could be problems with this? Yes? No? Need some feedback on this. Thanks.

    :)

    Sygate

    G'day all,
Well, I did go to the Sygate Forum and was advised to uninstall 4.2 completely the one with the problem and Install the new version 5. I did and all is running sweet again.
In general I do like Sygate I did run Tiny before that but Sygate I do prefer and as I had mentioned it had performed flawless.
And yes there is no more tick on "Auto Update" as a rule I generally never do but this one must have slipped through.
Well friends thanks to all of you
and I sincereley hope you all have a
    wonderful Christmas.

    Hi Panda.

Well, there's two separate things you should be concerned with on your computer. The first is getting viruses, trojan horses, and worms. The second is intrusions by someone on another computer. A firewall has nothing to do with viruses, trojan horses, and worms. As such, updates to a firewall except in rare instances is not a big thing. There is no list of viruses, trojan horses, or worms to update here. The only update would be to the executable code where a menu item doesn't work right, etc. A good firewall just blocks unauthorized programs from connecting to the internet on your computer and blocks unauthorized entries into your computer from outside.

If you don't have a firewall your computer is getting scanned at least 5 times a day from outside and some of those neat games you installed also installed some spyware that collects data and sends it out whenever you log on. You just never see it.

Sygate is very good in this respect. It will ask you to authorize each program that connects to the internet (you can tell Sygate to remember that answer for that particular program) and will inform you when there is an attempt to get into your computer from the outside. When I first installed Sygate I had about 10-20 attempts a day to get into my computer from different places. Mostly from Canada. Sygate gave me the address of each attempt and I could trace them back and see who they were.

As for viruses, trojan horses, and worms, I don't run a virus checker. I see no need for one. It's quite simple to keep those things off your computer. I do keep one around in case I need to check a particular floppy or cd but that's all. I don't have one running or even installed on my computer. If anyone's interested in this statement I'll explain but if there isn't any interest I'll leave it alone. It's just a little involved.

I would put Sygate on. Hope this helps.

Thank you, giles. You did a great job in explaining how the firewall works. I already knew that, but anyone else reading this will learn a lot from your description. :) The feed back you just gave pretty much convinces me that I will be getting Sygate as a firewall.

My virus checker is Norton, up to date and very reliable, as far as I am concerned. We all have our own choices to make in life and you have made yours....I have made mine. :) And we are all happy!

As for trojan checkers.....I don't use them and probably should. I don't network, so am not that concerned about it. Should I be?

Thanks again for your tips and hints.

HAWK22......Great to hear your problem was solved! Don't you just LOVE this board??????????? :D

    :)

    Doesn't surprise me. They're a bad bunch ;)

No, not really; (surprisingly) AV's are more-or-less as effective as AT's when it comes to detecting Trojans.

Sygate, Kerio, ZA, Outpost et al are all equally effective. I use Kerio (the successor to TPF) simply because it is the lightest on resources and is very easy to use.

Thanks for the tip on Kerio. I think I'll give a try. I've tried some of the ones you mentioned but found them all lacking in one thing or another. I took a look at the screen shots of Kerio and they look bout as good as Sygate. Seems they would work about the same. I usually try a lot of programs to keep up with developments. I don't like setting up a system for someone just to have funnies with some of the software. Sygate seems as solid as a rock so far but Kerio sure looks good. I like the small resource usage you mentioned. Thanks again.

If anyone out there is up on networks on XP, I'm trying to run a PPTP over the internet with VPN. I can log on to the computer at the other end but cannot map the networked drive. File sharing, etc is all setup on the other end, drive is shared. I can map my own drive so it ain't here. All the usual done when checking, firewall down, proxy down, logging on either as guest, admin, with the setup username and password, proxomitron down, etc. Just can't see that drive. Very interesting problem.

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Kernel32.dll is a system file. Nothing to worry about. I'd suggest that you allow the connection - even though you probably wouldn't suffer any adverse consequences were you to block it.
