    Hi,
I have DSL internet, and connect with a Westell 6100G modem set to medium security. I also have a Netgear RP614 V4 router between the
modem and my WinXP computer. I have a software firewall installed as well.

I recently did an online firewall scan, and it showed all the ports were stealthed, except for Port 21. It is showing as "closed ".

Is there a way to get my Netgear router to stealth the Port 21?

    Thanks,
    Mechanic

A stealth port is a closed port being rendered invisible by your firewall.

Please read GRC Shields UP FAQ's for better understanding of difference between Stealth & Closed ports.

Actually, a stealth port is a port that a hardware firewall or software firewall prohibits communication on, e.g. the port will normally respond to open requests with "closed, I'm not available for use now ". The firewall prevents a port from responding with the "I'm closed" message, thus giving the apparancy that no computer exists at that IP address, to some port scanners. There are port scanners that can trick a firewall into letting the port respond or that can ID the router/computer even if all ports are "stealthed ".

If port 21 shows up as "closed" in a port scan, then that means that your computer is running an FTP server or the router has a built in FTP server, and it's not available.

Check your Netgear & see if there's a setting to disable FTP services.

FYI, Gibson's port scanner is not that robust and can lead one to believe that they are truly stealthed. To really test your network, have a trusted friend scan your IP address using nMap.
