I am having problems turning on the windows firewall in vista business. The roadblock I keep getting is cannot start service. Try manually starting. Error code 5.

I found out that the firewall service was not turned on by accident. I was trying to activate the computer I was using for remote desktop use. I understood this service was turned off by default and needed to be turned on which would have been pretty straight forward if the firewall service was working correctly. I've tried a lot of things but nothing really seemed to work.

I tried the microsoft knowledge base and came up with something from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943996 but I really didn't understand what they wanted me to do. I was able to go to regedit and look at the registry but didn't understand what the correct values were or how to change the permissions so I'm looking for help.

I have a vista business machine with 3gb memory with both wireless and wired networing enabled. I've removed my virus protection which was mcafee enterprise 8.5 thinking this might be the problem. I have windows defender installed and have read this might be the problem but did not try to uninstall at this point. I have never ran pcillian or norton which I've read can cause similar problems.

    Please help!!!!

Go to relevant key(s?), right-click and select Permissions. In the top box, Groups and Users, you should see a listing with MpsSvc. Highlight it (click on it) and in the bottom box, Permissions for MpsSvc, put a check in the boxes Full Control -> Allow and Read -> Allow. Click Apply and OK.

I don't have Business, so you might see options for other than the local machine, you need to select the local machine
