I have been having a problem with Firefox for a while now, with versions 1.0.5, 6 & 7. When i open firefox it will tell me that there is an update available for downloading (Sometimes different versions of Firefox, sometimes theme updates). When i accept it, it searches for the updates and displays them, but when i click to download them, the progress bar opens up and nothing happens! The only way to get the downloads is to log onto Firefox's home page and download them from there. I am using XP Home SP2, Sygate Personal Firewall and Tiscali 2meg broadband.
Sygate has got Firefox set to allowed and even when i turn it off or set to allow all, still nothing happens.
If anyone could shed some light on this i would be very pleased.

    Thanks

    Alex

There have been not been that many updates of the program, for me to be able to pass judgment. The final versions are what they are, and are not being updated, unless you go from 1.0.5, to 1.0.6, etc. I much prefer to go fetch them myself, when I am ready. And, pretty much feel the same about extention update. I, rather, get the .xpi, but read up first.
Now, the situation is changing with 1.5, now at the RC1 stage, where you do get partial updates, in going from one version to the other.
As for extentions, there is very little going on, with so few being compatible.
Only those present are updated, and there is no way, other than the hard way, to find if anything new is compatible.

Have a look at your Options/Web Features/ and "Allow Web Sites to Install Software" It should be checked and the Allowed sites should list the site you are downloading from.

When the Progress bar pops up, Does your browser show a yellow bar that asks for permission to download? Mine did it for a long time before I noticed it was popping the yellow bar up there.

I have "allow websites to install software" enabled and there doesn't appear to be any yellow bar. It gets to the stage where it says downloading updates and simply nothing happens. The bar does not progress, nothing pops up or anything. This has happened with all the three versions i have used so far.

Can you tell us what you are trying to download? If you give a link I'll try it and see if it works for me.

How about the allowed sites. Is the place that you are DL from listed?

I was trying to update from version 1.0.6 of Firefox to 1.0.7 and also update to NOIA theme to 2.98. The normal download manager works fine, its just the built in updater in the program.

    Alex,

My solution is to Download FF 107, uninstall 106, install 107 and get the NOIA theme installed fresh.

I don't use the update features at all as I like fresh installs of everything.

Maybe someone can come along that is familiar with the updating procedure and give you some enlightenment on the subject.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help on the updating thing....

I have been doing what Bill suggested, i.e. download the entire installer, but it is not necessary to uninstall the previous program. As for the Theme and any extention, the newly installed Firefox will disable what is not compatible, and, if there is an update, it will flag it. Again, my past experience made me leery of updating from the extention window. I prefer getting the .xpi file, uninstall the old theme or extention, and then drag and drop the .xpi file, which will start the installation. This is practical for me, having a number of other programs which can use the .xpi.
I never tried the upgrade with FF1.0x, but I have it with 1.5.x
