Be carefull. I applied this update, about 750kb, and it slowed down FF so that
pages were taking 10/11 seconds to load.

Finally, i went back to previous version.

Did you do the update from Help|check Updates?
I will try it, but, most important I want it to be stable.

Wow! I did the update as you mentioned, and, wow! is it fast. It lost the Roboform, which I got earlier today, for 1.5. But it has speed to burn.
And it is not as bad in memory usage, about 48MB, instead of the customary nearly 60. Now, I will be taking it for a spin.
By the way, 1.5 is supposed to be much slower than 1.0.7. I do not make much of the initial loading, but it renders fast after that. I start with 6 tabs, and four of these are pretty intensive, including msnbc.com in the IE mode.

    Clif,

I would download the offline installer: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5.0.1rc1/win32/en-US/

Uninstall the current version, and then install 1.5.0.1rc1. I find it incredibly fast, certainly faster than 1.5.

I don't like the online upgrades and never have, plus I usually have an excellent experience with a clean install, i.e., uninstall exsisting version, program files, and reboot before installing upgraded version...

I did the online update, expecting the worse, but this is a good thing. Fast (only Opera beats it) and much less of a memory hog. And, it has not crashed on shutdown, yet.

I have not noticed any appreciable change in memory usage.
One thing I did notice is that I INSTALLED to a NEW separate directory and it honked up the add/remove section of Control panel.

Only showed ONE Mozilla FireFox 1.5 ( I previously had and still have -FF 1.5 Final).....
add/remove points to uninstall for the 1.5.0.1 install.....ergo - looks like no way to uninstall FF 1.5 Final via control panel.

    regards:captjlddavis

My Add/Remove had Mozilla Firefox 1.5, and it is now Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1.

Way FAST!! Memory usage down to HALF! Didn't time load up but it's simply screaming now. Very impressed so far.

Interesting to see all the different results. I find it very fast, and page rendering seems to be instantaneous.

    Westside,

You say that Add/Remove lists Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1? On my system it is listed as 1.5, and I did a clean install...

    Ineresting!

I did as you suggested Ramona and now its working fine. So much for the
auto-update process. I will ignore it from now on.

    thanks,
    savagcl

No clean install here, and, I have 1.5.0.1 in the Add/Remove, matching what was said in Help|About Mozilla Firefox.
I am using now a beta version of K-Meleon1.0, also based on 1.5.0.1.
The original 1.5 was installed in a folder of its own, and I am using the original 1.5 profile. By the way, it did bring up Talkback after installing an extention, and restarting the program. I can't remember if 1.0.7 ever did that my 1.5 did it once, and 1.5.0.1rc1 did it on every exit. That's why I went back to 1.5. So, I was having my trepidations.

    clif,

Good to hear that all is well. I don't know if you remember in the old days of Netscape Communicator 4.xx, there was a "SmartUpdate" which is the equivalent of the Fx autoupdate component. It rarely worked and caused a lot of headaches for users.

I never had a Smart Update work in NS4.x, as well as the stub installer. I kept getting messages that connection was closed "by peers ". (not my peers!)

Just to muck up the waters. I did forget to mention that I tried autoupdate and it went thru its --whatever it does and reported that it could not complete the installation.

Checked "about firefox" and sure enought it noted the version to be 1.5.0.1. So did the Add/Remove listing.

It's still screaming along -- so far very stable.

    Bob:confused:

    Bob,

Weird that you and Westside are seeing the 1.5.0.1 in Add/Remove. Remind me, do you run Windows XP?

    Thanks!

Yep, XP SP1. SP2 hates my notebook.

I, also have XPHome SP1. I learned from a friend of mine, when SP2 came out, to stay away from it.
My 1.5.0.1 is still coming up with the Quality Feedback Agent, on exiting. This started with 1.5.0.1rc1. I got it once with 1.5, to which I went back from the rc1, and once with this build. A total of six times. There must be something wrong, but I cannot see a pattern. It did it twice at this website, once at my bank website, and once after installing an extention. I did my report. It is not so bad to have it once in a while, but I wish I knew why. Everything goes smoothly when I am in the browser.

    Ramona,

Yes, I do remember "SmartUpdate ". I guess the word "Smart" was supposed
to mean something, anything except "Smart ". I stopped using it after the first
attempt since i found out it was the opposite of smart. :)

Interesting, my add/remove shows as: Mozilla Firebird (1.5).

I think that we should take a Census.
As for the "smart" update, I had dubbed it dumb update. But what is happening here is somewhat insane.
I am sure of one thing, i.e. that 1.0.7 will remain my default browser, and, if anything I may use Seamonkey1.0.
