Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

    1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining
    network.http.proxy.pipelining
    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter the entries as follows:

    Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true "

    Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true "

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

    3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0 ". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now.

Pipelining is part of the Prefbar, an extention. But, I was told told that pipelining does does not help with broadband. I have 4MBs connection. How fast do you want to go? Or is it physically possible to go?
But, if someone with broadband tells me, I am willing to try. I go fast enough as it is.

Wow!! - a noticable speed improvement.

Thanks for the tip - I had seen it before, but forgot where

Just a quick note - to change from "false" to "true ", just double click the entry

Try it, and remember what you did. It should not hurt, though.
I was mistaken about what is helped, and what not. I got this from the prefbar FAQs:" Enables or disables http pipelining. This is supposed to speed up page loads over dialup, but not all servers support it. "

So if I understand this correctly, the Prefbar2 has an option to check for pipelining that will essentially change the commands in the config file to correspond to those in the first post in this thread for Firefox1.0?
Does anyone have Prefbar2 installed with the pipelining option checked? If so, would you mind typing about:config and checking this out for me? I would especially like to know if the nglayout line has been inserted in the config file. Thanks.

PrefBar 2.0 does, indeed, do exactly what Labarum says. In fact, you can open a tab, type "about:config ", click the "Pipelining" box on and off in PrefBar and watch the values change.

I didn't look at the nglayout entry until after I set up PrefBar to use pipelining but, when I did, it was there, and it was set to "0 ". Turning pipelining off doesn't change it.

    Addendum ...

It's really hard to tell whether there's a speed increase with broadband. I've got cable and, in checking the speed with some of the sites listed on the dslreports.com Speed Tests page (scroll down to the section for your country to find one or more sites close to you), I find little difference between having pipelining turned on or off.

    Edit ...
I've about come to the conclusion that using pipelining may actually make cable download speeds slower, but I'd like to see some other input before I make a final decision.

Jim, I believe you're correct. I made those changes then checked out the speed pages and sure enough... my upload and download speeds were slower (about 30 kbs slower).
