    Firefox or NOT!!

    Good Morning-Ramona,
Decided to take the "plunge" and try Mozilla?? I ordered the 5 set CD's from the store, I wonder why they don't specify what's contained in them?? They are all identical!! I thought each CD would be something "about" Mozilla!!
Apparently, all of Mozilla is on ONE CD, I.E. mozilla 1.7 on the label and around the edge is "includes tech. previews of Mozilla firefox 0.9 and mozilla thunderbird 0.7 "... No info. was included in the package, instructions, ect.
My question: Ramona, can I install Firefox along with my installation of NS 7.0? Will it work as IE does with NS navigator, they are compatible.
I don't want to dump NS communicator - my email client - it works so well I'm not ready to "try" to a complete reinstall to Mozilla!! Just one step at a time, ya, know!!
I posted this sillydog forum below:: therefore, I defer the the SOURCE, Ramona!!

Thanks for your info and help.

dluchini30 Yes, you can run Firefox along with Netscape Mail. The only problem is, if you click on a link, it will be launched in Netscape and not Firefox. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do to do such a thing, but I do remember Ramona talking about something you could add to prefs.js for Communicator 4, but have no idea where it is...

You may want to try Thunderbird, since it's really the same thing in a standalone application.
Thanks, Ramona for all your past help. You really have a great way of explaining things for us "newbies!! "

    Hi John,
You can certainly run Firefox, Netscape 7.0, and Communicator together with no problems whatsoever. If you are using Communicator as your email client, that should offer no problem, as Firefox is a standalone browser.

Sorry, but I am just getting to the Internet, so won't answer you on the other Forum. Let's keep the discussion here, O.K.? It just confuses the issue when posting in both places.

Let us know if you have further questions...

    Macromedia flash problems

    Good Morning-Ramona,
Well, I DID install Firefox, but --- and always there is a BUT!!!! Right <g>
I enjoy listening to internet radio, that requires Macromedia Flash says firefox.
OK. I D/L it and followed instructions...upon installing the flash player...error resulted C:/windows 32 dll libary could not befound??? What's that all about??
Nothing in the FAQ's address that!!
Seems much faster than NS 7.0 currently-clean-fast browser. Sure hope I can get it to work.
Now, you see why I'm SO reluctant to install software these days, Ramona!!!
Something ALWAYS happens I can't figure out!! DLL's are an important part of windows, I sure don't want to ***** up something there...
Thanks, Ramona again for all your kindness.
Somewhere I read, that Firefox would "accept" all previous settings and bmks...from other NS/Mozilla browsers?? Not sure what that means, but nothing was "automatically" transfered from NS 7.0 to firefox 0.9. I have the Mozilla CD "s. Do I have to Import/export all these bmks?? ARRGGGHHH....<g>

    John,

You will need to update your Firefox. See the "Sticky" at the top of the Forum for download information: : Important Security Update for Firefox 0.10.1 PR Uninstall your current version using Add/Remove.

Firefox will not migrate Profile data from either Netscape or Mozilla, as it is unique to these two browsers, and has its own Profiles folder, as you no doubt have seen. To move your Bookmarks from Netscape to Firefox, simply rename the Firefox bookmarks.html file (Xbookmarks.html) then copy the Netscape bookmarks.html file and paste into the Firefox profilename folder.

As for Firefox and Flash, see this page: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/flash.html#new-flash10pr

I have no problems whatsoever using Flash with Firefox 0.10.1 PR...

    John,
when you set up Firefox, you should be prompted to set up a profile. When you do that, you would have a bunch of programs to select the settings from, at least for me, who had four or five related programs. I am not familiar with using nothing but the default profile, so, possibly this happened to you. I have differently-named profiles for all my programs, and the Profile Manager would pop up. If you want to create a new profile, all you new to do is to right click on the Firefox shortcut|Properties, and add -p to the Target area with a keyboard space, before the -, just like mine: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p . After you create the new profile, you can add the name, if you wish: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p profilename
You may have to copy the bookmarks.html from the NS7.0 profile, and paste it into the Firefox profile. Or, just Import the bookmarks from an existing program (Bookmarks|Manage Bookmarks|File|Import.
Now, of course, it depends on how serious you are with Firefox. I was not a final version, as you have it, and it is not with the new update. These things are constantly evolving, and are far from being fully acceptable.
I was usually the subversive one, and do things against the current. But, I am fully aware of the risks which I am taking.
You may not want to go through all the bother.

    Westside, and John,

Westside, thanks for correcting me on the option to migrate Profile Data.

John, here is a Screen Shot which will shows the choice of which Profile data you wish to migrate to Firefox.

Also new to Firefox, and learning with you...

    firefox or NOT?

    Greetings~~All,
Thanks all for replying. I've learned I had to be in admin. rights to install the flash player on XP!!! Such a hassle!!!
Firefox seems to be working OK? When I installed from the CD, nothing came up accept the choice to make FF default browser, which I did. The screen shot you showed, Ramona - I never saw. I was not given the choice to make a profile. Being a stand alone browser, I thought that was normal?
When I go to add/remove area in XP, I see for FF it's total MB is 14.54!!!!???
Good heavans, what did I load?? It says on the web site FF is 4.75 MB....
I sure wish mozilla had sent an instruction book with the 5 pak CD set??
There is so much on that CD for FF that I have no idea what's required or not!!
    Obviously, I Loaded FF 0.9 setup.exe.
It's getting confusing folks!!! Ramona, you stated to "uninstall" FF 0.9 to get the updates, I just add them or is that not possible, since I'm on dial up...
Before I DO anything, I await your reply. I thought the CD would be SO much easier, being I'm on Dial-up. Now if I have to uninstall and D/L the latest version!? The CD's are useless!!!! Below is the URL for patch.

    ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.10.1/patches/

Sorry, for being so dense!!! I sure don't want to corrupt my XP setup, I have no one to turn to for help!!!
    Thanks All for your patience.
    John in Dallas.
Edit:::Well, folks!!! I just DID IT!! Went to import in FF - then the box poped up as you described "what to import"
I clicked on NS 7.0 and presto!! All my bmks. appeared!!
Somewhat different than NS7.0 but all there. Even figured out how to get my personal toolbar up there!! Surprise!!!
Haven't figured out yet how password mgr. works, it's not in tools as NS7.0 or fill forms box.. Although, in options on FF, it states they are there and saved. Is that an extension in FF I must DL??
When clicking on a link if FF, communicater won't come for emails, trys to open outlook-which I NEVER use...Just a minor
inconvenience...I'm no where ready to tackle Thunderbird for email!! That looks very intensive. One of these days, I'll do it, though.
Thanks---All for your help and patience.
    John

    John,

Of course you have someplace to go for help, and we will always be here for you! :)

You can manage your Passwords in the Privacy section of Options. Just click on the "View Saved Passwords" and that will allow you to manage the passwords. Passwords in the Firefox salted folder are named "signons.txt ".

The patch is only for version 0.10 PR, so you would still need the full version of 0.10.1 PR. That is, unless that's what you meant that you did. Those CD's become obsolete quickly when a browser is a work in progress, as Firefox is now. Here are some links which will give you more information on the browser:
