My son has Windows XP as his operating system with Firefox his browser. He uses Norton's Clean Sweep and would like to configure it. Here's what he asked:

"I want to configure my Norton Clean Sweep to monitor Firefox. Clean sweep will erase the cookies and the cache, much the same as you can do in the options portion of Firefox. However, I like the setup of Clean sweep much more and it offers me a sense of security because I have used it for so long. My only problem in my search is although Norton offers a very good product their support is so-so for these types of issues. I have a feeling that Norton will only recognize IE as a browser. Is this true? "

I'd appreciate any information you can give. Thanks.

    Hi James,
I don't have any Norton software, and a thorough search provided me with nothing definite for a recent version. But, a 2002 review of Clean Sweep gave the specs, and no browser is mentioned, only the operating system.
I don't think that Clean Sweep should be relied on for items like Cookies and Cache. I have set up Firefox to keep the info only to the end of the session. It works well, but it may be inconvenient at some website, where you have to give information about yourself every time. But, I understand that if there is software which will work for you, why not?
The 2002 review is too sketchy to deserve a link, but it refers to Temporary Internet File, and those are not the province of IE.
I like to use Spybot Search and Destroy, and it is incredible to see how many cookies are dumped. I use a lot of Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox programs, and Spybot S & D detected 84 cookies from advertising.com, all over. But, none in firefox, indicating that firefox can do its own internal cleaning.

Agree with Westside re: nortons clean sweep. In addition to spybotSD, would add adaware personal edition (free - in my 'links' below).

Thanks, Westside. I'll pass this message on to my son. :)
