I feel rather dumb, but I didn't know where to post this question.

I NEVER use IE unless I am forced to. I either use Netscape or Firefox.

But this week, at least three time, when I attempted to update or register several programs I use, I was given an IE browser window. That wouldn't be so bad, but it continues to be nothing but a blank page. It never takes me to the web site that I need to get to.

I recently started using Firefox but can't see how that would affect anything. Could there be some sort of a conflict?

Is there anyway I can get IE from opening vs. Netscape or Firefox?

    Thanks.

You are not saying which is your default browser. So, what you say may or may not mean that IE is default or that the website is too thick to understand that default browsers could be anything other than IE. You can select either Netscape or Firefox to be your default browser, from you Preferences or Options. And, to make sure that you are not bugged by IE, go to your Control Panel|Network and Internet Options|Internet Options|Browser tab| uncheck box that IE should check...IE has not been my default for a couple of years, at least, and Firefox has been my default for the past month. Netscape respects that,Mozilla does, and, surely IE does.
But, some websites are still trying to open IE, and, at times, even when I allow IE, which is blocked by Zone Alarm, I get a blank pages.
I am a bit surprised that you are having problems with several (three or more, in my book) programs. So, if you are doing what I did, and still have problems, try to contact whoever, and tell them about your problem.
I have never had a problem with either Netscape, Mozilla, or Firefox preventing pages to load.
Do you have any name for those programs, and did you look at specs for them?

IE has NEVER been set as my default.

Right now, as in the past, Netscape 7.2 has been my default browser.

I'm not sure, but I don't think I had this issue until I installed and started using Firefox. I don't seem to be having any problems with Netscape or Firefox.

One of the programs I tried to update was a tax program and the other was a website for one of the silly programs I have. Last week it was something to do with Excite.

From the software I'm using at the time, when I click on the link I get the popup asking if I want to set IE as my default. I always say no and then an IE window opens and then NOTHING.

I can't figure out how to get to the specific link via Netscape or Firefox. I have even tried having the other browsers open when I click on the software link and IE still opens up with the same routine.

Try right-click on the link and "copy "; then past it into your preferred browser.

    vegaspat,

In your Start | Settings | Internet Options | Programs
Disable "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser "

In Windows Explorer | View | Folder Options | File Types
Scroll down to: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
Netscape should be listed after "Opens with: "

    Sparrow,

There is no "link ". I misled you. For lack of how to state that it was just a "button" I called it a link. Sorry.

    Ramona,

I'm not sure right now, but I did disable the item in your first paragraph. I then opened the last program that gave me problems and IE opened with no question about the default browser and I was taken to the web site.

I haven't tried your second suggestion until I see if this one change has done the trick. I did check and IE is listed instead of Netscape. I am assuming it has always been that way but if this problem has not gone away I will try changing that also.

Thanks to both of you for the help.

I am getting more and more confused by the minute. I don't know what your program is like, but some programs have preferences which can be set to have them open with a specific browser. I have the Copernic search products, and I had them set to open their searches with Firefox, and they did this regardless of the default browser. Now, Firefox is default, and, I may change to Mozilla1.7.5.
I am using Tax Act program, and its preferences allow me to select a browser.

That is strange. Tax Act is one of the programs that I was using. I didn't even have any idea that you could set browser preferences from inside the program. I will check that out right now.

    Thanks.

I just checked and you are right. Now I really feel dumb. The TaxAct is set for the "System Default ". Since I didn't know the option was there I am assuming that's what is was before. I wonder why it kept opening the IE blank, usless window?

Oh well, between you and Ramona, I may have it fixed.

    Thanks again.
