The solution I received from Ramona was short lived. The following day it refused to open again. After reinstalling it again, my home page would open and I could navigate to other pages, but once I minimized it or came back to it a day later, it was unresponsive and a new page wouldn't open.

Interestingly, when I clicked a link from my e-mail, it opened up in Firefox, but ater clicking a few links it became unresponsive and clicking the link in the e-mail again wouldn't open the page again (until I reinstalled).

This is perplexing and anyone I've asked has no solution.

I'm hoping someone can come to my rescue again!

Can you give a link to a previous request for assistance, or explain what went on. Right now, all I know is that Firefox crashes. This statement
puzzles me. Are you leaving your computer on, all the same? Or, it just happens even if the computer was restarted?

If changing the config helped, I am not sure which setting worked.
I have Firefox2.0.0.14 and Flock1.1.2 (its identical twin), and both have the setting to "true ". I can't remember that either misbehaved.
Thanks Mike, but I am as confused as ever.

You're welcome. I also checked my setting and it is set to "true" and I haven't had any problems for a long time. Eyeguy23, I wish I had a suggestion, but nothing comes to mind short of trying a new profile.

It is very frustrating since I have used Firefox on all my computers (3) for a few years now and this is the only one that is giving me trouble. It is my most recent computer too. What do you mean by trying a new profile? I'm sure it involves a bit more than just reinstalling the software.

    Thanks

    eyeguy23,

Try creating a new Profile, to test whether or not your current Profile is corrupt. Here's how:

    Close Firefox
    Click on: Start | Run
In the blank field, type: firefox.exe -profilemanager

    Click: Create Profile
In the blank field for "Create new profilename" type a unique name. Don't accept the "Default User" which is the default name.

Now start Firefox with the new Profile and see if your problem still exists.

When you start Firefox the Profile Manager will open, and you will select the newly created Profile from the list.

    Let us know what happens.

Sorry I didn't get back here sooner, but I see that Ramona has the answer for you. Hopefully, that will do the trick. Thanks Ramona.

Well, I tried your instructions, but after the first command in "Run ", it takes me to a website called Profilemanager.com that doesn't seem to have anything to do with Firefox. I may be omitting a step, but I don't think so; I only had to type in the name and hit enter, right?

    The mystery continues.

No (I wish), but now it is worse. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and nothing will open. I checked under processes in Task Manager and firefox is running, but it nowhere to be found on the desktop or any toolbars. I close it in processes and try to open it again, but get the same result, i.e., it is running in the background, but not visible.

BTW, I tried entering firefox.exe profilemanager (with firefox closed) on my other computer and it also took me to the website Profilemanager.com

There must be something in this computer that is blocking firefox from opening. I have Panda as my antivirus software and I disabled it (in case it was causing the block) but it didn't change anything.

Did you type in "firefox.exe -profilemanager" (without the quotation marks)? The "-" may have been missed. I tried that command and it works just fine for me. Also, has there been any indication from your AV that there is an infection? Maybe malware? I noticed on this page from Mozilla, that a backdoor trojan could keep the default browser open even if you shut it down. Have you tried uninstalling Firefox in SAFE mode? Before uninstalling, check your Task Manager to see if there is any instance of Firefox listed.

Things are pretty slow, now, as I do a virus scan, but entered in Run:
firefox.exe -p , with a - between the .exe and the -p. No quotation marks, and, only the letter p. The profile manager came up. I have three profiles listed, and, I can select the one I want, or Create a new profile. As Firefox is, supposedly installed in this path:C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox, typing in Start|Run|C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe, should open the profile manager, since I had unchecked the box, to use a specific profile.
I don't have to even find the firefox.exe icon, but, if the icon is missing, you can go to the Mozilla Firefox location, right click on firefox.exe| Send to Desktop. A shortcut icon will be created ( and if it is there, and could not find it, Windows will tell you. I have had problems finding some shortcut). Of course, this does not take into consideration what Mike said, about a possible trojan.

If you would like a permanent shortcut in the Start | Programs list you can do the following:

To create a shortcut to the Firefox Profile Manager:

    Close Firefox
Open Windows Explorer and browse to: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
Right click the file "firefox.exe ", and select: Create shortcut
    Right click and select: Rename
Rename the new shortcut: Firefox Profile Manager
Right click the shortcut again and select: Properties
In the Shortcut tab window, place the cursor at the end of the path inside the Target box
Click once (so that the path is no longer highlighted)
Add one space, then -profilemanager to the end of the path:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
    OR
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
Click OK to exit the Properties window.

Drag the new Firefox Profile Manager shortcut to the desktop or other location.
    OR
Drag the new shortcut to the Start | Programs Menu

For a shortcut to a specific profile

Follow the above instructions but add -p, one space, then the name of the profile in quotes, as follows:

    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p "Profile Name "

Good news team! I followed Westside's instructions to access profilemanager and it worked! Then I followed Ramona's original instructions on how to create a new profile and that worked! So, I have had it up and running all afternoon and have restarted the computer and everything seems fine again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Is it possible to import my bookmarks from the original profile (I did copy the profile folder to the desktop when all this began), or do you think that will cause the same problem to resurface again?

    Thanks for all your help.

    Joe

    Joe,

Copy the bookmarks.html file in the old Profile, and paste it into the new Profile, replacing the existing bookmarks.html file.

Glad that you have everything up and running again!
