Hello i am using XP sp3. I have recently downloaded and installed the latest version of firefox and since, have had an annoying error report every time i start firefox, i get an error message stating "error 680 there was no dial tone "
the trouble is i use broadband, not a phone connection, which is somewhat baffling as to why this error has started. I have checked various settings within firefox and in control panel but to no avail.

Have you done a Google search for: "firefox & error 680 "? There are a lot hits. Also, is Internet Explorer working ok?

Thank you for your response Westside. I have done several searches, looked at many of the hits, but could not find any useful answers, hence i have come here to see if anyone else has had a similar problem. They all seem to cover a phone connection error which "error 680" refers to. Also Internet Explorer is working fine.

AFAIK, Firefox uses the connections settings in Control Panel > Internet Options (same as IE). If you have a dialup connection there then put a check next to "Never dial a connection ", or remove the unneeded dialup connection(s).

Also, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and set the following services to Disabled:
    Remote Access Connection Manager
    Telephony
    then reboot.

If IE is working fine, its most probably an issue with FF itself.

Where did you download FF from ? Any extensions ?

Thank you to TonyT and rsinfo for your replies to this post. It would appear that disabling Remote access connection manager has solved this problem. Once again Thank you for your help. Happy boy again!!!!!!

    Glad it worked.
While your at it, you may also disable these services to make the system more efficient:
Distributed Link Tracking Client (only needed if on a Domain)
    Remote Access Connection Manager
    Remote Registry (XP Pro only)
SSDP Discovery (have not found a need for it yet)
    Web Client
