I have Windows 98 so can only use Firefox up to 2.20. It now regularly crashes after years of good operation. Firefox Help suggested I eliminate the Add ons. That did not solve the problem. I un-installed Firefox 2.20 then down loaded and installed another copy. That did not work. I then installed Firefox 2.7. and that did not work.

Try creating a new FF profile, the existing one may be corrupted. Back up your Bookmarks fisrt and import them into the new profile.

I have tried uninstalling FF 2.20 then downloading and installing a copy. I have tried installing FF2.7. I have just installed FF2.20 again without uninstalling. the crashing still occurs. If I remember correctly, it only occurs when I am using Yahoo Mail. I removed the Yahoo Add on without stopping the crashing. Note that the bookmarks I have built up over the years have not been affected by all this un-installing and re-installing of FF.

I hope that you understand what Tony is telling you. I will try to summarize:
    1. Firefox is made up of two parts: a. program, removed by uninstalling b. profile, not removed by uninstalling. The bookmarks are located in the profile, but something else may have gone awry with the profile, making it unusable, at least in part.
By the way, I had to do a Search to realize that FF2.0.20 was the last of series, which came out in Dec.2008. I am using FF2.0.20 on an old Win88 SE computer. I could not find anything about a Firefox2.7, but, rather of a 2.7 toolbar.
The current versions are of the 3.x series. I have 3.0.15 and 3.5.5.
You may get crashes from one or more addon. Addons are disabled when Firefox is started in its Safe Mode (I think that this is available in Win98 FF2.0.020).

Westside, I was really referring to FF 2.0.0.7 which was the version installed before FF 2.0.0.20. TonyT, I did not understand about the FF profie until Westside's post. I will do as you advise and report back.

I have been to FF Profile Manager and Run firefox.exe _Profile Manager This brings up a message to close FF when it is not open. I have even rebooted but that still happens so I have been unable to create a new profile for some reason. FF is still crashing on occasions when I go to Yahoo Mail.

    Denise,
if FF appears to be not closing, you should go to the Task Manager (Cntrl+Alt+Del)|Processes, and close firefox.exe. Also, you can update your Firefox from Hel|Check for Updates. However, it may not worked with Win98.

Thank you westside. I will do that and then try the Profile Manager again. The FF 2.0.0.20 I have installed is the last that works with 98.

I closed FF on the Task Manager list then shut the system down. On re-booting, I ran firefox.exe -Profile Manager and got the same message Close Firefox
Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system.
I then went to Task Manager again and found Firefox is not on the list!

And, am I correct that you could not create a new profile? I have never seen anything like that. There must be something that I don't understand, because it should be possible to create a new profile, and uninstall/reinstall the program.

That is correct, I have tried to run Profile Manager everal times and ahve got the same result each time, even when I have used Task Manager to eliminate firefox from the list. I have uninstalled FF and then installed a downloaded copy.Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) list does not have FF in it now but FF 2.0.20 is running. FF 2.0.0.7 is also on the desktop. I now suspect that is the problem so I will send it to the bin and report back.

I have sent FF 2.0.0.7 to the recycle bin and it made no difference. I still cannot change the profile. I will not do anything else at the moment other than log crashes. I will report on that in a couple of days.

I believe that the Desktop shortcut, for any version is "firefox.exe ", unless renamed by the user. Since I keep three versions of Firefox on my computer, I have to rename each one, and, run each one with a different profile. The choice of the profile is made like this

Thank you Westside. I will use Tweak if the crashes resume. I have no need to use various versions of FF but will go the way you recommend to get around the problem. The thread is now marked as solved.
