I was about to download 2.0.0.7 which tells me it will install over the existing version. I checked my Installed Programs in the Control Panel and found that I have not only 2.0.0.6 but also 2.0.0.4 installed. I assume that I must have installed .6 over .4. Does it pose any problem to have more that one version in the installed programs?

    Virginia,
I never had more than one version at a time. I would start by uninstalling the oldest version. Don't uninstall 2.0.0.6. I am about to work on 2.0.0.7. And, I don't know what it will do.
So, do nothing for now. Do you have two folders for 2.0.0.4 and 2.0.0.6? Or is it, just, some Registry gunk?

I only show one folder under Programs in Internet Explorer. The only place 2.0.0.4 show up is in Control Panel under Installed Programs. I left my computer a short time ago and when I came back I had a message that TB 2.0.0.7 had installed and I needed to restart. Everything seems to be working OK so I think I will leave it all alone for now. If I experience any problems, I will be back. Thanks.

    Actually, Windows Explorer.
I don't trust Firefox to do the updates. I have checked to have Firefox what to do. Interestingly, I would have never know about the update had it not been for this forum. Last time, I told Firefox to go ahead and install the update from 2.0.0.5, but this time, I downloaded the entire thing, and, uninstalled 2.0.0.6. Then, I installed 2.0.0.7. Only one addon seemed to be incompatible, but I made it compatible with Mr Tech Local Install. So, I am in business.

I always say "Do what works on YOUR computer ".
    Must have current Data backups.
    Please consider having Image backups.

With that said, I allowed Firefox to automatically update the following 3 computers ....
w98 - 10 year old computer local build - No problems.
XP - 5 years old - local build - No problems.
XP - HP / 9 months old - OEM build - No problems.

As per extensions, in most cases you will need Nightly Tester Tools or Mr Tech Local Install to change version max value of some extensions. Generally, I only get nervous about extension compatibility when a new version Firefox is released, not updates.

    Dennis,

I'm curious as to what is shown for Firefox in Add/Remove Programs?

    Virginia,

If you have multiple listings for Firefox in Add/Remove Programs, then if you should ever try to uninstall older Versions, you will also uninstall the current version... Been there, done that.

I agree with Westside, that a clean install is preferred, altho as Dennis says, different strokes for different folks! ;)

I tend to do a clean install every other time. An update is a new version, after all.
I had two version listed, long time ago, I think with a Mozilla, and both versions were removed from the Control Panel. That's when the clean install is necessary.
I did the manual update with 2.0.0.6, and it showed Mozilla Firefox2.0.0.6.
I remember of a time when the version was not listed using an automatic update.

    Hi Ramona
Good to hear from you - was hiding behind my keyboard in cowardly trepidation. :) :D :p ;) ;)
All 3 computer have (1) Firefox listing, stating Mozilla Firefox (2.0.07)

Actually Ramona, I adopted my backup strategy because a number of programs perform online updates. Firefox gives you the OPTION to choose between online update or manual uninstall/full reinstall ... some programs do not. One we all go through every month, MS update Tuesday. Additionally, they recently issued a "hidden automatic online update" which has caused a stir in the crowd. Many of us use AVG free, it also install's program updates online (not to be confused with daily viral database updates). SpywareBlaster has recently switch to online malware database updates, not sure if they will issue online program updates (each update is singular, previously was full).
The point I'm making is many online updates offer no option, they just happen ... at times overriding user settings to silently online update (MS). So whether you agree or disagree is not an option or more precisely stated ... you don't. If you do not have layered, CURRENT backups, you run the risk of getting baked.
