How do you CLEAR the Location Bar?

I've searched all the options, I've checked their site and I've tried to delete them manually.

The list keeps growing and I know that there surely is a very simple method to do this. I would think that if I cleared the history that this is not the same thing?

One easy way is to download the Prefbar which has an option to clear the address bar. It also has a number of other great options and is a worthwhile download. :)

    James,

So you mean that there is no option to do that inside FireFox? Does the list just keep getting longer and longer?

If you want to edit the list, follow captjldavis suggestion, from another newsgroup.

The urlbar-history is located in you "localstore.rdf" file in your Profile directory.
    BACKUP your "localstore.rdf" file....

With ALL instances of NS closed, open the "localstore.rdf" file with a text editor.

You should have an entry similar to the following:

    <RDF:Seq about= "nc:urlbar-history ">
    <RDF:li>about:cache</RDF:li>
    <RDF:li>about:config</RDF:li>
    <RDF:li>user_pref( "mailnews.ui.threadpane.version ", 2);</RDF:li>

You can edit out (delete) the entries that you do not want.
Save the file and open NS - your edit will be reflected in the dropdown url-bar history.

If this does not work for you, restore the "GOOD" localstore.rdf and things will return to normal.

Well, they sure don't make it easy, do they. Netscape 7.2 had a very simple method.

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Unless I misunderstand you, this is how to clear the bar. In Firefox, go to Tools-->Options-->Privacy-->History. Hit the clear button. You can also change the number of days that web addresses stay in your location bar.

    Mike,

I was afraid that that was a different issue. I wanted to keep my "history" set up for 9 days so that I could return to any page if I needed to. I thought that the Location Bar was different.

In Netscape it was two different items. I thought that if I did delete everything in my History folder the items in my Location would still be there.

    Sorry I sound so dumb.

Did you read my post? I know that you are talking about the drop down and, not the History, which are treated independently.

The edit of the localstore.rdf file pertains to Moz NOT FF....

I believe that the drop down in FF locationbar is stored with Formfill data ( where exactly I do not know - yet) .....and in the history.dat file

**You can clear INDIVIDUAL drop down entries by highliting selected entry, (do not click/select)...hold down shift key and press [del] button.....

clearing history.dat DOES clear it, but it also clears all the history.....

It is very confusing to me as I am not a FF power user......

    HTH

    **edit....I goofed...corrected in red above......

Well, I took the easy way out and used the Shift/Delete suggestion. It worked but I sure thought that FireFox would have made it a one click deal.

Thanks to ALL of you for the help.

Hi Capt, I knew that you could come up with with something. I did not know if FF1.0 even had a localstore.rdf file, but went no further than finding its existance. I do not have a thing in the dropdown menu, probably because I allow cookies to be kept only till FF closes. But, honestly, I don't care to know.

I have PrefBar 3.0 installed, but "Clear Location Bar" doesn't work for me, nor do a lot of PrefBar's other "features ".

To each his own, and I use only three: PrefBar, Launchy, and the much maligned TabBrowser Extensions.

The ONLY reason I have PrefBar installed is because it has a setting which removes the gawdawful colors and/or wallpaper that make some web pages almost impossible to read.

This is going in every possible direction. Could anyone tell me what setting I should have to see anything in the drop down of the URL location bar? I have been searching, and not finding anything yet. Cookies are the only ones which woukld make sense. Otherwise, when I click on the arrow, nothing happens.

    fulvio....
    I got to laugh.

    thought you didn't care....

To be honest, I really don't understand all I know about this so called feature.....
There appears to be several contributing factors and results....

The "locationbar" dropdown (arrow at right end)..only reflects entries that were manually entered in the location bar...either by typing or by pasteing.....
I have no idea where this data is stored.....i think it is in "formhistory.dat" but not real sure.....

The dropdown that appears when you start entering data ( autocomplete )
seems to be from data stored in History.dat file ( sites that you have actually visited )
    toggling:

    disableautocomplete=false

does not seem to effect this.....beats me...

Everything looks to be tied together and dependent on what your settings are for "keyword" and such....

Locationbar ( urlbar ) is independent of the co called "searchbox" whichis a whole other thing...

sorry that I can't be of more help....

    regards:captjlddavis

In short its way over my head......

    Westside,

What is your setting for History? Mine is at 5 days and I have items in my drop down for at least that long. If I don't click a URL for 5 days, it disappears. I tried changing my setting to 0 days and everything disappears every time I close Firefox. If your's is set to 0, I would suggest changing it and see what happens.

    Cap'n ...

Thanks for pointing that out, as I was wondering why I had so few, and those quite old for the most part. As it happens, I seldom type or paste URLs, almost always opening them from links, bookmarks, or history.

As for me, I couldn't care less where they're stored (other than as a matter of interest) and, now that I know how to delete them (highlight, then Shift + Delete), I can begin to work on other knotty problems. ;) :)
