Hi, I'm deliberately looking for things to watch out for on this.
    OS: XPproSP2
    PC: AT mobo
    card: USB 2.0 PCI

Problem: this old mobo (no, I'm not going to ATX, I would need a new case, etc. I'm saving for a 2nd gen. intel mac to dual boot to win-whatever) doesn't do USB 2.0, I find. It did usb1.1 ok, but this was pre SP2 & a reinstall of XP from a slipstreamed wXPSP2 homemade CD. I can't seem to find a USB1.1 driver to use with this PCI card. I still have the original XP MS cd, but how do I access the driver, which I presume will work? Do I need to boot from the CD (original i presume). Do I remove the USB support using add/remove windows software (when booting from HD, there is no hardware remove in the add/remove cp).

Device Mgr. does show, in "USB serial bus controllers" submenu, 2 "unknown devices." I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling from the normal wXPSP2 OS of the HD, but invariably the same message returns. These may or may not be related to the Pioneer DVR-107 in a USB 2.0 case & the USB hub, plugged into the USB PCI card. But this drive has shown up in device mgr., and worked, pre-OS reinstall. Any procedures to follow to find old driver and do successful install? Thank you.

The USB 1 drivers should be loaded by default - have you installed the mobo chipset drivers or checked out the manufacturer's archive for USB 1 drivers? You may need to update the BIOS and ensure that USB support is enabled

    Some possible help here ....

The USB 2.0 (PCI) card will need specialized Windows XP drivers. Being 2.0 it will be Windows XP "compliant ", but will need it's own specific drivers installed. Do you have the drivers disk that came with the USB PCI card?

The driver problem may be further up the ladder, like the chipset drivers which will control the PCI system and the USB system. The "card" will run through the PCI system and should be independent of the motherboard's USB system (so if the onboard USB controller breaks down, you should be able to install a USB PCI card and run devices from that). You may need to look at the chipset drivers which you should get from the motherboard manufacturer's website.
