    Hi all,

When I right-click an icon and Properties, Find Target doesn't work.
Is there a fix for this?

Hi Chris. Try this fix. Click Start< Run and type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll and hit enter.

Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

    Hi Evan,

    Unfortunately, it didn't work.

I'm trying to speedup my friends computer and restore it's functionality. I think I'm going to have to do a repair. I know there's two ways to do it, but I don't remember which one doesn't mess everything up. Repair? Repair install?

The Repair Install would be the option that reinstalls the Windows XP Operating System without removing the personal data from the hard drive.

Before you do the Repair Install try running this fix and see if that helps.

    Hi Evan,

I already tried Doug Knox and several others: No joy. Could you please refer me to directions on how to do the repair? It's been so many years I've forgotten

I just double checked and my friends computer is only XPSP1. Now I have to go through all the brain damage on doing a SP2 slip-disk as I don't remember how I did it a few years ago.

    open command prompt as 'administrator'

    type sfc /scannow

    press enter

insert operating systems cd if asked.

this will detect and repair any errors in operating system.

Let me know if the issue still persists.

    Good Luck

There's a workaround for running the tool without the CD...

I copied my I386 folder from the CD to D drive, and then made registry edit to redirect the tool to that folder. It beats having to insert the XP disc over and over again.

I always Google a problem until I hit a wall — and then I come here.

Anyway, cleaning all the cache, trash, cookies, CHKDSK, installing "fixes ", defragging and then doing a sfc /scannow did no good. Winlogon only showed a few (53) minor inconsistencies that "it" cleaned up. Find Target still doesn't work.

Wouldn't it be better to instal XP3 and see if that sorts things out. You will need to instal it at the point you fix it. Neil.

    Hi Neil,

That's what I'm trying to do. This machine is SP1 and operating poorly. I want to do a repair install first, get back to it's original state (with everything working), and then install the SP's. I can't seem to do a repair install, though. I keep getting "CDBOOT: Memory overflow error" — but that's another post; even though I've tried all the "fixes" I've found.

Sorry for not marking this as "Solved ". I built my friend a new computer with a clean XP install.

Thanks for all your help, guys.
