    Here is a challenge...

    In XP i dont like the find files and folders option.

    I much prefer the original style like in 98...
    My question is: does anyone know a way to change XP so it looks like the older style...

    Hope someone can help

    :eek:

    There are some changes you can make to the appearance of the default Search companion, but making it look like it did in Win 98 is not one of them. The following is from XP's help file;

    "Windows XP Home Edition offers many new and more effective features and technologies. The Search Companion has been enhanced to help you find what you're looking for more quickly. "

    To change the appearance of Search Companion;

    Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    Click Change preferences.
    Click Change files and folders search behavior.
    Click Standard to be able to search for a variety of things, such as files, folders, and people, from one location.

    -or-

    Click Advanced to quickly display the options to search for files and folders.

    Hope this helps. :)

    I came across this thread on a search for 'find files' in XP forum. What I am curious about is why the find files function in my new XP Vaio laptop is soooooooooooo much slower than on my old reliable w98 standard AMD 500 box? Searching for files on the new laptop seems to take forever and a day. It is very frustrating.

    i think it has something to do with XP's file structure, i know it still the same old FAT, but Xp does something to it, it short it sort of lists all yer files and location of em, in a alphabetical list , i think, it aint gospel,

    hope it helps

    Wazz - -------

    If you want it to look just like 9x/Me/2000's search, download the "Powertoys" set from M$ and install "TweakUI ". Go to the "explorer" tab and it the "settings" column, check the box that says "Use Classic Search in Explorer ". This gets rid of the XP-like interface which you can't do just by messing with the preferences in the search panel.

    Edward1c - Maybe you have 'Indexing' enabled. This service is very taxing on your system if you have many files to check when you have to look for something.

    If you have more than one drive, you may not like the way XP always defaults to searching all drives. To overcome this and also make the Search screen appear somewhat simpler;

    Go to START > SEARCH > select C: drive > select Change Preferences > select Change Files And Folders Search Behavior > tag the Advanced box > select OK > select Search > immediately select Stop > select File > Save Search > type C:\Search C in the file name field > select Save > navigate to C:\search C > right click it > select Create Shortcut > go to that shortcut > drag it to the START button > then drag it up to the Launch Program area (top left) and when it become a divider line between the existing programs there, drop it > right click it and select Rename > rename it to Search C (without extension)

    That's it! Use this launch icon whenever you want to search the C: drive without all the hassel that XP's normal Search path gives you. This is very handy and lots easier to do than to explain.
