When shutting down, Windows 98 SE goes through its normal steps but does not display the final splashscreen which says that it is turning off the computer. I checked the exit sound file, which is o.k. I assume that the file containing the splashscreen was accidentally deleted. Does anybody know the name and location of this file and where I can retrieve it from to replace it?

This deals with Gabe's Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack.

I only have the original Win98 SE version. Never had any other OS installed.
My user.exe is in the following locations:
    Windows\System 537KB dated 19.4.2000
    Windows\Helpdesk\Backup 537KB dated 23.4.1999
    Windows\Options\Cabs 537KB dated 19.4.2000

    User32.dll is in:
    Windows\System 54KB dated 21.4.2000
    Windows\Options\Cabs 54KB dated 21.4.2000

Which ones does the OS actuslly use?

It uses the ones listed in Windows\System. The others are backups. I will have to boot into my 98SE setup and see what settings I changed. If I remember correctly I did something so I wouldn't get that screen at shutdown (maybe TweakUI?).

Suggest you run System File Checker (see Start -> Help). See if it lists the file Logow.sys.
Note that SFC will list all your Windows Updates.

Mattman, I ran SFC but Logow.sys did not show. However, it resides in the Windows directory.

Whiskeyman, I may have not made myself quite clear: when I shut down, I first get the normal Windows screen with the Microsoft Logo and it says 'Windows is shutting down...'. This is not the splashscreen I was talking about. After that initial Windows screen the screen goes black with just a cursor blinking in the top left corner. After that I used to get a second screen - all black - with the sentence in an orangy colour saying 'Your computer is now shut off', or something to that effect and the computer would turn itself off. This screen does not appear anymore. Instead I get a black screen saying:
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. Press any key to restart ".
when I press a key the computer does not restart but shuts off.
I would like to go back to the original version as described above, where I do not have to press a key to turn the **** thing off. It used to do this automatically. I still recon, that particular file for the second splash screen is missing. What's it's name of it and where does it live?

It's not a propriatory Computer, Whiskeyman. I tried your linked suggestions, but unfortunately none brought me any closer to solve the problem. I also downloaded and installed Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement - still no result.
Thanks anyway for your kind help, I always appreciate anyone's suggestions. It's what makes this forum tick.

    Protection errors:

    Lots of possible causes.

If you run out of options, try doing an over-the-top reinstall by booting to a startup floppy, run setup for Windows and install to C:\Windows.

I just booted to my 98SE drive. This was overdue. I needed to update all of my anti-virus and anti-malware programs plus Windows updates. I only get the Windows splash screen then the black one with flashing cursor. I cannot remember the last time I saw the black screen with orange lettering. I think that screen disappeared after an update some time ago. It may have had something to do with fast shutdown. I prefer my setup without having to wait for all those screens to show on shutdown. It does not cause problems with that screen missing.

Mattman, I don't want to go as far as re-installing the OS.
But thanks anyway for your help.
Whiskeyman, I found the file which contains the splashscreen I am talking about. It is called "logos.sys" and it resides in the C:\windows directory. If opened with a picture viewer you can see it contains just the orange text on a black background saying "It's now safe to turn off your computer ". I replaced the file with a new copy from the Win98SE disk, but it still is not called up by Windows at shutdown. The reason why I wanted it to work again is that I don't have to press a key to actually turn the computer off. It used to do this automatically after this splash screen appeared.
Never mind, I give up and after all, the system works fine otherwise. Thanks for your help.

It sounds like you can get by without repairing it for the moment. Have a break and think about it occasionally.
A Windows protection error is important. If you find that you get that message or faults during normal running you want to consider doing the over-the-top reinstall of Windows. You do not lose any data or need to reinstall anything afterwards, it just reinstalls the system files and drivers.

I do over-the-top reinstalls whenever I find a problem that cannot be traced. I have never found the system to be in worse shape afterwards (I installed a new motherboard two days ago and did such a reinstall. My system is the same as it was on the previous motherboard an hour or so later...going a little faster though with a CPU twice the size :D )

The links I have here may make it clearer:

Thanks Mattman, this is good advice and I will definetely take it up if and when things start to get wobbly. For the moment everything just works fine. I just did a comparison test on the "PC PitStop" site and according to that test my computer comes out as one of the fastest in the Win 98 SE field!
