Hello to All. My Vista upgrade from Business to Premium had just about finsihed (99%?) when the installation was interrupted. The error message reads something like "Installation was interrupted, please restart and continue with installation ". Sadly this msg comes up on every reboot! I have tried to install from the CD but the option of `Upgrade` is not available to me with the message that I should "continue installation from within windows" - which results in the original error message. I have tried safe mode but with no success. Does anybody have any suggestions please? Many thanks, Mark from Scunthorpe.

You'll have to clarify this one. Are you saying you are trying to upgrade from Windows Vista Business to Windows Vista Home Premium?

That won't be possible, as Home Premium is a "downgrade" from Business.

you may need to system restore (F11 on boot screen, at least on mine) and restart the installation WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS. should work.

ps sorry about my grammar, temporary onscreen keyboard slave.

    Interrupted Vista upgrade error message

Thanks, I am unable to try that at the moment but I seem to think that all restore points were cleared as part of the installation process. I will give it a go anyway and I am very appreciative for the help. No need to apologise for the grammer, I have never heard it called that before! Regards.

Aha! Good question, thankfully for me I have a laptop as well! But seriously, it seems that Vista does this and there is no way out of it apart from a full re-installation which I do not want to do because I will loose all my data but I am hoping that someone out there will have a solution. Best regards

If you do a full installation, You can go back to the old one, and hope it works(I know all this through trial and error(cost me 3 computers))

Make sure all external devices are disconnected, eg; printer, external drives, desktop speakers, anything usb other than keyboard/mouse, etc. Physically disconnect the internet connection (at least until when/if installation continues). If no help, try to restart the upgrade from the beginning without external devices attached.

Progress regarding failed install and error loop

Firstly - thanks to everyone out there for all the suggestions, keep them coming as I am trying all of them! Also, and it may help others out there, I got a very nice reply from someone `on the other side of the world`. It is kind of pessimistic but it sounds like a factual experiance from another person. If I manage to solve it with all of your help then I intend to e mail this Lady with the solution. I will keep you posted on how I get on. Regards, Mark from Scunny. Here`s the email I got..........

    Subject: Re: Interrupted install

    Message: Hi,
I got in touch with the supplier and according to them Vista is programmed so tha if Installation is interrupted it just shuts down so you can continue any further. Why, I don't know and nor the benefits. They said they only solution was to have the laptop back and the hard drive would have to be fully restored. In other words a complete system restore.

I am not much of a techie person so whether this could actually be done by yourself I am not sure but as mine came with no discs I didn't have much choice.

I'm guessing maybe a local pc shop would have an idea of what to do.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...hope you get it sorted. if you get a different answer to me, let me know!

    Mark,

Do you have any rescue/recovery disks, or partition, on your computer, which would allow you to browse the hard drive without having to boot into the OS? You could rescue all of your data, and then start from scratch. That's how I have done it when a similar situation arose earlier in my existence. Annoying, and time-consuming? Sure. But you will likely be better off with having your data backed up and then restored after you do a clean install.

Incidentally, I just did this with Windows Mobile this very morning. Much faster and less cumbersome, of course. But now I can enjoy a stable, freshly installed Windows Mobile 6 on my AT&T Treo 750 with my apps re-installed, and data restored.

Vista and Windows Mobile 6 Professional get along unusually well, if anyone is wondering, by the way. :D

    Update on interrupted install

Hi Crunch Dude, ta for your suggestions - it is nice to see that there are people out there willing to help each other battle against the oddities of Microsoft. Why, the hell, this should happen with no way of recovering I do not know! Surely other people have interuppted installs from power failures? Anyway, Dude, I have not managed to get my paws on my puter yet but I do feel that the disc is partitioned so I should be able to rescue my data and do a clean install. To everyone out there this seems to be the only recovery in this situation so please a) don`t upgrade/install during lightning storms and b) make your back ups to other drives! Best regards, Dude, and thanks again for all the help from you and everyone else.

    Mark,

I just re-read the thread and as for that email you got from whatever "tech support" person about Vista being designed to render your system useless to the point where you would have to send it somewhere is just ridiculous, by the way. I continue to be amazed every time I get to talk to "tech support" as to how little (to nothing) they know about what their job title implies, if you ask them more than where the start button is. So scratch that silly email. At any rate, can you tell me who your system manufacturer is? Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, etc?

BEGIN OT: Sorry for the delay in my response. And it feels so good to write this down, but I was able to find my ex I should have married alive in Miami. Funny how I kept obsessing over getting my precious UXGA IPS screen. Didn't matter much when she was MIA./END OT

    A reply

Thanks, I feel that you are right - my resolution (To all!) was to carry out a clean install following the cyclic error incurred during the installation. Sadly I found no way in which I could actually finsish the installation as, indeed, Vista told me I could!

Best regards, I am pleased you found your lost `soul mate`!
