In Event Viewer there are four categories: Applications, Security, System, and Internet Explorer. The events within each category are then separated into Information, Success, Warning, Failure, and Error listings.

It is possible to filter each of these types of events but the default is to show all of them. Is there any way of switching off Information and Success events to create a new default set?

    To see only important entries....

Please download VEW and save it to your Desktop: http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe

Double-click VEW.exe then under Select log to query, select:
    Application
    System

Under Select type to list, select:
    Critical (Vista only)
    Error

Click the radio button for Number of events
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

    Hi Broni

What an elegant little utility! It is a shame that it cannot action Critical events for Windows XP, but it represents a giant step towards solving my particular problem. Is this software continuing to be developed?

    Thank you :)
XP doesn't have "critical" type of errors. Only Vista does.
I'm able to contact the author, if any issues arise.

OK. I interpreted 'critical' to equal 'failure' in XP.
