My friend Daizy used to have on her signature line something like: You don't suppose I'm depriving a village of an idiot do you? Well that's kind of how I feel about this question. Looking stupid never stopped me before so I'll just go ahead....

I use Outlook Express 6. I have a number of folders that I created to store mail. When someone writes me I have a rule setup to put their mail in it's proper folder. What I would like to do is AUTOMATICALLY, like if I had a rule, put OUTBOUND mail in a specific folder similar to the rules I have of inbound mail.

I've looked at the rules and tried a few to see if I can make it work for outboud mail but so far I haven't figured it out. I'm left to manually move the mail from my sent folder to where I want it.

Does anyone know of a way to automate this or refer me to a different mail client that has the ability to file outbound mail?

    As always... thanks in advance.

I believe OE has a setting in Options something like "save copy of sent messages in sent items folder ". If so, disable that and try making a new rule that goes something like "when sending messages to *@* save copy in folder x ".

It's been many years since I used OE and I forget how the rules go.

I find that when I un-check the box that saves a copy in the sent folder that the message doesn't appear anywhere. It just goes to the bit bucket in the sky I guess. I don't see how to make a rule that applies to anything other than incoming mail. Not saying it isn't there but I can't see it.

    Jim,

What you're asking is certainly possible with most other mail clients but AFAIK OE only filters incoming messages.

The best I can offer if you insist on using OE is to BCC all outgoing mail to another of your email accounts which can then be filtered when collected by OE.

Well I did say in my original post:
I looked at Gmail and am currently trying to figure out Thunderbird. Do you have a suggestion for a POP mail client?

    Sorry Jim I missed that,

You'll find a few suggestions, personally I still use Courier it's fine for personal use but tricky to export from if you decide to change in the future.

Pegasus mail can also easily handle your needs but although I admire Mr Harris' work it's a bit quirky and doesn't exactly conform to windows standards.

I'm sure others will come up with more suggestions though.

Tony, thank you for the information. I don't have office only OE. I have just recently switched from IE to Firefox and just started checking TB. Hope to get into it with both feet today.

I started looking at TB the other day but deferred to inspecting Courier. I will report that it has a lot of bells and whistles but it doesn't seem all that intuitive to me and was going to uninstall it this morning. Your response is right on time.

I'll report back to this thread to let all who are interested know if TB and I have a mild meld or not:D

    Not Sold on Thunderbird

I've been struggling with TB. I downloaded it and imported all my mail from OE and my address book from OE.

I keep telling myself that I will figure this out but I'm not so sure. For instance all my addresses are in an address book named OE Addresses (or something like that) but you can't move an address from one book to another. I had multiple address books in OE and in TB they are all lumped into one. I thought I might just add (duplicate) the addresses but I couldn't copy an address either:confused:

I could not find the add-on for filing email from the sent folder. The link above was not valid.

I did look an a whole bunch of add-ons but did not find one that describied what I wanted to do. It could be an experimental add-on but I am not really interested in experimenting when in a steep learning curve:confused:

BTW, does anyone monitor the experimental add-on's as some are quite old and I wonder if the developer has given up:confused:

At this point I'm going to redress and go grocery shopping and look at it with fresh eyes when I return.

Tony is right, you can drag and drop emal addresses and thus move them from one folder to the next. Guess I was mis-mousing when I tried. AND, the link did work and for that I have no explanation about why it didn't work until Tony said it did.... magic:cool:

I'm sorry to report that I've decided to give up on Thunderbird as well as Firefox. Maybe it's just me getting old and unchangable or possibly it's because it seems like a unfinished project. Lots of tweaking and many of the instructions for the add-on programs are not clear to this user.:(

I will continue to try and find a replacement for OE. While it has served for many years it just doesn't cut it either.

Many thanks to Y'all who have contributed on this thread.... I'll be back!
