Files with .lnk at the end

Computer: Toshiba 440CDX. Program: Win 98

"All" programs on this laptop carry a file extention with .lnk at the end. The icons have changed to the windows logo.
When trying to open files like word or excel the following error comes up.

The object that 'C:\WIN95\Desktop\Mirosoft Powerpoint.lnk' refers to has been removed or is unaccessible.

Note

This laptop was originally set-up with Win 95 and upgraded to 98.
It has been working fine for years.

What did I do and how do I correct it?

 

LNK files are shortcuts.
It would appear that the shortcut association has been broken.
