Hi everyone ,I was digging around looking for answers about W2K pro that I just installed and found you guys so I figure here's where I need to be to get the right info from the ppl in the trenches as it were.

Ok ,here goes; I just tried to install a game (GP2) and when the game did a system test it said I needed to have the files\buffers set to at least 20\20 and that at present they were set to 40\0 and to edit the config.sys file accordingly . Imagine my surprise when after going looking for the config file I discover that there isn't one and the help file says something about needing to create a config file using an OS2 editor and other stuff about the root directory that quite frankly is beyond me at this point and just makes my brain hurt trying to figure it out without a manual. So her I sit thinking *** do I do now?
So,can anyone out there point me in the right direction to change the buffer setting in something aproaching plain english please.
After finally coming to terms with W95 (sort of) after many years of trial and error I upgraded to W98SE about 2 months ago when I upgraded the motherboard but I hate it as it seems so bloody unstable. So after talking to online friends and others around the place I figured W2000 is the most stable version out there and got hold of a copy . It seems great so far but without a manual for dummies like me I'm stuck .
    HELP!!!!

    Hi,

If you are really interested in playing windows games, I would suggest that you make a win98/win2kpro dual boot system, because win2k is not optimized for games (so I heart), though it is indeed more stable than its predecesors. It has been reported in many places on the net that some win-games run smoothly on win98 but just refuse to run on win2k!

Anyway, here is some clue which you might try to adjust the environment variables: on the desktop, right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> environment variables. You may add new items there and try whether your game could be pleased to run. Good luck.

Hi Izhao , thanks for replying.
The game is actually a DOS game and the help file tries to tell you how to change the buffers setting by somehow creating a config file within OS2 but it's too vague for me to understand what the go is. I tried messing with the environment variables but it didn't do what I wanted (or I was going about it wrong) either way I'm no further forward. I don't want to run W98 if I can possably avoid it . I only had W98SE on my PC for 2 months and wasn't impressed with it at all. I found it unstable and prone to freezing up ,that's why I went to W2K as everyone said it was the most stable platform of them all. I'm not a wiz at this sort of thing by any means and without a manual on W2k it might be slow going figuring out the W2k secrets, haha, but thanks again for responding.

See my comment on DOS games in XP here it's about halfway down the page.

Basically what it says is that Windows NT/2000/XP are entirely 32 bit OS's and doesn't contain DOS, but instead a command interpreter which looks like a DOS window (and has a lot of people thinking that it is actually DOS).

Which means that DOS games/programs are extremely hard if not impossible to get to run under those OS's.

Windows 95/98/ME on the other hand are combined 16/32 bit systems which contain DOS access, which allows for greater success in using DOS progs.

I haven't tried this but it might work...

Try to find some virtual machine software (like vmware for windows) and install a real dos over win2k as a virtual machine. Then there might be a chance to make the DOS games run.
