hi guys, i hope someone can help because i can't find info on this anywhere!

i recently installed a friend's hd, which is dual-boot 98se & xp but all on one fat32 partition, to just take his personal files (doc.s etc.) off for later use elsewhere.

his boots ok on its own, & now as E: (under my w98se hds C: & D: ) reads ok, haven't tried writing yet because: windows explorer under my hd shows his hd's files & folders in red text!

woh... just double checking... yep! C:&D: 's contents still show in black, but E:'s are in red...

what does this mean? i've never seen it b4 & don't want to proceed til more info. ...

I only have one partition so do not know if the following settings can be different for each partition.
Right click on Desktop, click Properties|Appearance tab|click Item drop down. You can now change the colors for many items.

    help!

well ta Welshjim but this is not the problem, i.e. windows Appearance colours aren't changed, it's windows explorer.

windows appearance colours ok, msie colours ok, just wexplore...

it has red text for the folders & files, (only in the right-hand pane of a split explorer window &) only for the added hd...

when i go into the folders the view reverts to normal black.

    help anyone help !!!

I don't know about red but in WinXP blue is used for compressed files and green for encrypted files.

    MYSTERY SOLVED !

    G'day Guys, Case Closed ! :)
u can consider this thread not urgent anymore folks, problem solved, see below:

(search string to help others: file folder windows explorer different color colour 98se)

snakefoot (Master Sergeant on MajorGeeks Message Board) says:

    "
With the introduction of the Active Desktop, a new feature "Customized Folders "/ "Webview "/ "Web Content" also arrived.

It makes it possible to give each folder their own special look depending on their contents (MP3, Pictures, Movies, Letters, etc.).

My guess is that the folder with the red text has been customized. To disable this custom look, just renamed the file desktop.ini to desktop.old (Resides in the customized folder)

More Info Change Webview for a folder:

    http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/windows/tips.html#WEBVIEW_FOLDER
    "

thanks to snakefoot i've solved the mystery, his tip worked fine & is reversible :)

    thanks to those who tried,
    c ya!
