    I just purchased a new laptop w/XP Pro and want to transfer my user files from my old W98 laptop. (My W98 box has no ability to write CD's or DVD's.)
    I believe my two simplest options are:

    a) A usb flash memory device;

    b) xfr via the infrared ports.
    I have read some of the implementation steps needed to implement the infrared method and found that I don't have the Direct Cable Connection (driver?) loaded on my W98 box, nor can I find it available on Microsoft's website - although I'm sure it must be there somewhere.... also, I don't know how many other steps I'll have to take in pursuit of this xfr method.
    Re: the USB flash memory device xfr option - is that relatively simple, or am I facing a complicated process there also??
    I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide in this xfr endeavour..!!

    Do you have network cards in both of the computers? If so you can connect the two directly using a "cross-over" network cable.

    ReggieB: Thanks for the suggestion.. in fact today I'm going in to a friend's corporate office to connect both to their network, share the directory of the old w/the new and see if I can simply drag 'n' drop the files between them... thanks again for taking your time to respond to my needs... isn't this BBS great ?!

    If I have success today I'll repost to this thread... stay tuned...

    Problem solved.. used a 256MB Flash Memory USB device to transfer all my stuff.... the only time-consuming thing was delivering the .exe file (1.1MB) from the device to my W98 box so that I could execute it there and create the device driver on the W98 box. After that it was smooth sailing! Thanks to all.!:)
