    thanks in advance
    to all you people
who read and reply to requests for assistance

I am having a problem transferring files
between an old and a new computer

    the new one
an IBM ThinkPad running win 2000
    and
an older IBM ThinkPad running win 98

the new laptop (with win 2000)
has a 'files and settings transfer wizard'

I have followed all the instructions carefully
    several times
    attempting to transfer files
with a serial port to serial port cable
but the new laptop does not find the older one

    I must have overlooked something
    in one of the configurations
but I have not got a clue

    the strange part
is that the same process went without a hitch
    once before

    the story as follows:

6 months ago my daughter complained about the weight of her laptop
so I bought her a lighter one

using the transfer wizard we transferred everything
then off she goes traveling and it is stolen

thanks to insurance we were able to replace it
but we are hung up trying to transfer files
from the first one that still exists

    the only difference this time
is that the newer computer has windows 2000
    whereas the last time
the newer computer had windows xp

one friend suggested I needed to upgrade to win xp

    anyway
    that’s the story
and I could use some help

    thanks again

    sam

    Thanks Newt

i sent the link to my daughter
hopefully she will work things out

may i ask one more question?

will upgrading her os to win xp professional
    (her upgrade path)
    resolve these difficulties

i am on win xp home
if we were both on the same os
    it might be easier
to understand what the other is describing

    thanks again

    sam

Sam - her upgrading to XP-Pro may well solve her problems. And if her hardware is adequate, she will probably enjoy XP-pro. Similar to 2K-pro but has some nice goodies added on to it.

But unless you upgrade to Xp-Pro as well, the differences in the home version and the pro version will drive you both a little nuts. They are more similar that XP-home and 2K-pro certainly but that isn't always a good thing since the differences (and there are a bunch) will sneak up on you.
