I have a new system with XP that had developed some problems with USB external drives (floppy, hard drive), as well as the CD-RW/DVD drive. Currently, I'm able to now use my USB drives OK, but the CD-RW/DVD drive will only read music or DVDs - and only through a media program (such as Nero or Windows Media Player).

Basically, Windows Explorer cannot read data on a CD-R, and will not autostart any program CDs for installation. You can't even read the data on a program CD (same as CD-R). From DOS, when you try to do a "dir" on the CD drive, it says the file system is not recognized. However, I can see the files on a CD if I go through the NERO interface. Also - you can't do a "Safe Removal" on the CD-RW/DVD drive... "can not be stopped right now" - something is hung up.

The problems seemed to have started after installing Nero 6.6.x (including InCD), and I had removed a SONIC-based recording package in the process. Not sure if somehow some XP files were removed, or if this is related to registry entries? I don't have experience in this area to know...

I have Administrator authority on the PC, and the .INF setting appears to be normal for autostarting a CD (they were compared to another posting on this forum).

My question is - what part of XP needs to be reset in order to fix this problem, and how do I correct it? The machine now has SP2 installed, however, these problems existed PRIOR to SP2, so it doesn't seem to be a factor. Is there a service missing (such as DLA?) that is needed for this support?

    Thanks!!

Try clicking on start, on run, keying in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and seeing if things improve any.

I gave it a try, but unfortunately nothing changed. However, I appreciate the suggestion!

    Keep 'em coming!

    Thanks

    Hey Kahaga: Look here:

I have had similar problems, mostly from conflicts by packet writing software, both from Nero and Roxio. There is another fix, but for some reason the board won't let me upload the .jpg, so I have to find the link and post again. As Arnold said: "I'll be back "

    Martin

I'm back, here another potential fix, and the one below that I was trying a failed to upload

    Navigate to this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Back up and delete these keys: Upper Filters and Lower Filters.

If you need help with the registry tweak, let us know, go from there.

I hope some of this works for you, but if not, try uninstalling Nero's InCD and see if that helps.

    Good Luck,

    Martin
