I've had the same problem....Many times if I search for the Vista machine I'll find it and all is good....It also seems like if I have Win Explorer open on the Vista machine is when I have noticed the problem.....

My XP machine has a drive mapped the the Vista shared folder. I have much better luck if I boot the Vista machine all the way up first...

if your seeing the same problem then its probably safe to assume this is a microsoft problem area so why the heck havent they addressed it. xp is going to be around for a long time to come especially with business' cuz no one can afford to keep upgrading just because m.s. has a new op system. heck they come up with a new one every 5 years or so and no one can afford to keep moving to the new stuff. when i was in i.t. we used to test for months and months before moving.

one would assume that it should be even easier with vista to do file sharing. i will try what you suggest and see what happens. thanks.

all i got to say about that link is WOW. has always been an easy function especially with xp but from the link sure looks like a pain in the you know what. will have to go to clients home and bring that link up and try to follow it.

    thanks.

I still find it easy. Thing is that you now have more control over it. On the Vista machine, just open the Network and Sharing Center, and configure how you want it. Works for me with Windows Vista, XP and 2000 machines on the network.

okay guys i am lost here.

i have setup a vista business machine and im trying to talk to my xp pro machine. dont understand what i am doing wrong here.

okay - from the vista machine i can see and do anything on the share i have setup on my xp machine. no problem here.

when i get on my xp machine i can see the vista machine but unable to gain access to the folder i believe i have setup to share. i do not have any special users defined on the vista machine cuz i dont care about restricting that. all i want to do or should say all my client wants to do is from his xp machine to copy files from the laptop to the vista machine as a backup function. gives me access violation when i click on the vista \\owner-pc.

    what am i missing ???

not really any error it is just telling me from the xp machine that i dont have rights to look at the folder on the vista machine. \\owner-pc

i have literally shared not only the user\owner group but also the my docs within the owners profile. still cant get to it.

thought i pretty much followed the link you gave me in setting permissions. have set it to private but when i look at the vista machine from the xp machine i now have owner, private and public displaying and nothing shows up in the owners folder that i have set to share.

Try creating a folder directly under the C drive and then set the share...

setup a folder on c just called temp. i copied files to this folder and made the folder sharable. am still getting \\owner-pc\temp is not accessible you might not have permissions on the network.

i can see the folder on my xp machine but still not able to gain access to it from the xp. obviously i am missing some setting but for the life of me i cant see where. xp sharing is so easy what has changed with vista. on the vista machine i can see and gain access to the files and folders i have made sharable on the xp with no problem just not the other way around.

    help.....

Do you have a password set on your account on the Vista Machine? If not, set one, then try again.

did both on the machine and it network sharing function and neither one did anything.

in just playing what i did was copied the test files to the public folder on the vista machine and i was able to see and access that folder from my xp pro machine. but why can i not just share c:\users\owner\mydocs ???

it doesnt make sense that i am unable to share the owners folder like always have in xp. i know m.s. made changes but what is so special about the owners folder that it wont allow me to access it. im not stupid i do have m.s. certs even though from nt4 so its not like i havent worked with this stuff for many years. vista printer sharing easy so why is file sharing giving me a headache.

i think i got it and this is the link and instructions i followed and it seems to be working - http://www.home-network-help.com/simple-file-sharing.html

i was at least able to access the vista c:\users\owner\mydocs with no problem. however i even though i have the whole owners folder shared when i try to access other folders i still get access denied. only way i found to get by that is to share each and every folder - IS THIS THE WAY ITS SUPPOSE TO BE ????? can you not just share the c:\users\owner and have access to the entire tree ???
