It's most frustrating... when using "File/ Save as" for a file, the most recent folder to which a file has been saved is presented as the first entry in the "save a copy" window. When positioning to the 'correct folder' in which this document is to be saved: the "save a copy window" presents files and folders in a random sequence..... some single files first and then folders in the order in which they were most recently used.

I'm sure in the past the 'files & folders in the "save a copy" window were presented in alpha order by folder name followed by the individual file names.

How can I get this alpha sequence restored?

Click on the "name" title in the bar above the files. If its in descending order (z-a) click it again. You probably clicked on "date modified" without realizing. You can sort the entries by type or size or many other details you can choose from (right-click the title bar).

Thanks, but there is no title bar in the "save a copy" window. Initially the "MY Documents" folder is presented, and then I navigate to the subject folder on the C drive where I wish to save the file. First I select "My computer" then C drive, then the DATA folder. The files and folders are then presented....NOT in alpha order as they used to be, but with sinfle files first in the list, (in no particular order) followed by the folders also NOT in alpha order but in most recently used order.

MOST frustrating, as I have many projects, all with subject folders within the DATA folder on C.

The folders used to be presented in the "save a coopy" window in order of FOLDERS in alpha order, and then single files.

How do I get back to this or did the devils in Redmond change the world forever.

Navigate to the folder and select View->Arange Icons By->Name (if reversed Alpha do it again). Now go back to your Application and check if Save As is corrected?

In the far right side of the Save As dialog box is a view button. Changing the view to Details allows you to sort like JCinvan was trying to point out.
