Whatever happened to the standard Backup and Restore program? I just upgraded to XP from win98 and I need to restore an old file.

Admin note: I merged this with a later request for restore help and renamed the thread. Newt

    Hello BroJoe,

Whatever happened to the standard Backup and Restore program?

If this is XP Home, it's on the XP cd: Valuadd\Msft\Ntbackup folder - Ntbackup.exe.

    If Pro, should be installed.

    Regards - Charles

Backup Translator [Restoring MSBackup files to XP]

Windows NTBackup cannot restore MSBackup files. MSBackup will not run in Windows XP, "missing language resourses." Short of re-installing Win98 on a separate drive or partition, is there a backup translator for NTBackup?

Have a look at this link.

This guy wrote a program that supposedly will restore them for you. It may be more than you want to mess with. It's a command line tool. Lots to read. If you aren't comfortable working from a command line, you may not want to mess with it. It's the only thing I could find. As far as I know your only other options is to do as you said or else find somebody else that runs 98 and restore the files on that computer.

Also, if you install win98 on the computer you have now, it won't boot to XP anymore without some extra work on your part (boot record will be overwritten) . If you're going install 98 only to recover the files I'd install it to a different drive with the XP drive disconnected. It'll save you some grief later.

Another thought just occurred to me. You could download Microsoft's Virtual PC, install it and then install win98 to that. There's a free 45 day trial. You'd have to restore them using that and then you can drag and drop the files from the VPC to your XP desktop or wherever. It wouldn't hurt to take a look at it anyway.

Try this link if the above one doesn't work

Excellent thought Zander. I hope to hear how it works since it has implications for other data rescue operations. The 16 meg download may be somewhat of a turn off though.

Edit: I see it's not supported on XP Home.

Thanks for taking care of my goof dude. I'm not sure what I did wrong there. I had a look at my link and it's definitely not right. I use ClipCache for this stuff and I probably grabbed the wrong clip. Didn't realize I had any bad ones in there. I usually check those things before I leave the thread. Guess I'll fix mine. Thanks again.

I didn't realize VPC didn't support home. I have to be more careful with those things. I have Pro and am always thinking in terms of that. Anyway, all is not lost if BroJoe wants to try the virtual pc route. There's another one available called Bochs that will run on home. It's open source so it's a freebie. I've read pretty good things about it but have never used it. I just downloaded it a few days ago but haven't gotten around to checking it out yet. I'll probably try it sometime this weekend. Anybody else game? :)
