File > Open freezes Excel 2003

File > Open freezes Excel 2003 and although Task Manager indicates that it is running rather than not responding & End Task is the only way to shut Excel down.

Other Office programs behave as they should in this respect.

Have repaired Excel and uninstalled/re-installed it with no effect

Double clicking on a .xls file opens Excel as it should, saves, saves as, etc, but File > Open freezes it.

Any ideas?

 

Is there a HUGH amount of files in the My Doc folder?

Thanks Steve, but it's Office 2003, not Office XP and no network, no shares and CPU does not approach 100%.

 

It'd be interesting to see how it would behave with an empty Doc folder...

I've had some issue with Outlook 2003 and trying to add attachments...Seems to come and go.

 

Exactly the same - freezes.
