I don't know how it happened, but while copying files from a SanDisk mini Cruzer something called "File Manager" came up. I've never seen this before. It looked like an early version of Windows Explorer that couldn't handle long file names. Folder tree in a left pane, file list on the right. Everything was DOS-type names like Progra~1.

Now I'm curious. :p What is it, and how can I find it again?

Bingo! :) Looks aren't deceiving. An early version of Windows Explorer is exactly right (windows 3.1 hold over, I believe).

"File Manager" otherwise known as "winfile.exe ": See if any of these google links fit what you saw: !Caution!!! NOTE: Please read carefully the risks and gotchas of using the old 16 bit app. This has and can used for menial things such as attribute changes or associations but there are better, wiser methods for doing anything you could do in here.

Your own help files via the startmenu may offer some additional nfo in any case thr resource kit for win98 will. This is on your win98 CD if you haven't installed it already.

As to why your files opened in winfile. I dunno? Do other files open in winfile rather than explorer? Scanned lately? Online as well as your using your own. Just askin' in passing I did notice this for example. Please notice the LocalMachine run key values on the bottom referencing winfile.exe substitution:

I'm sure there are others..........this is just a "Heads Up" warning of caution.
