If I was to move my documents, downloads, pictures, etc off of the C drive to another drive, would the windows 8/8.1 file history still work. Would it keep track of the changes made on the files at the new location or the old drive C location. There are several examples of how to move those folders shown on the internet, but none of them tell what effect this would have on file history. I have not moved the folders yet, just thinking about it and I like to know what problems I am going to get into before I make the change.
    Thanks, Gordon

Why not create a folder then put a file in it. Then put anything that's not important in that file, wait a few days and then move it. Check the file History

If you MOVE something and it goes wrong, you have lost it. Better to COPY then if all goes well, you can delete the old.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to wait until I get a second hard drive then setup file history and give it a try.

I think there is a misunderstanding of the question.

Unless I am the one confused, it is not that Gordon is asking about losing these files if he moves them. The question is, will he lose the file "history" of these files - so he can backup to the already saved "previous versions" of these files - if he moves them to a different location?

See the TechNet article, Windows 8: File History explained.

@ Gordon - if you want to move (cut and paste) these files, I say go ahead. But if me, I would not delete the original file location (folder) immediately - not until I was sure I will not need to restore that far back in time.

I meant create a folder. Then in the created folder create a file and put nothing important in the created file. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the link Bill. That was the most complete write up on windows 8 file history that I have read. Even though file history was designed to write the history on an external hard drive by default, it will work on an internal drive partition also. So it makes sense to me to have the history partition on a second internal hard drive for backup if the primary drive goes bad.

My poorly worded question was whether file history will only look at the C drive for the source of the backup. Arie wrote a nice piece on what to do when you install a SSD drive. In that piece he covered how to move the documents, pictures, downloads, etc... off of drive C. If those folders are moved to another partition, will file history still find them and create a backup file history? I will have to wait until I install a second hard drive to play around with it and answer my own question.
    Thanks. Gordon
