file extensions

    does anybody have a list of filename extensions and maybe some explanations of what each type does? I know thre are like a million of them but even a partial list would be helpful. I tried downloading a program to do this once but it got most of them wrong and really left no explanations. A simple list would probably work just fine. filename extensions are universal arent they??? please help as I am a bit confused
