I was e-mailed a brochure which had a .pdf extension. When I clicked on it, a message came up asking how to convert the file to readable format, but nothing works. It is all symbols. What can I do to read it? Also attached were 2 text documents that launched acrobat reader 5.0, but I got a message saying that they could not be opened. Do I need an updated acrobat?

Any suggestions to these 2 problems would be appreciated.

jeane--Try saving the .pdf file and the two other documents (like to Desktop). Then open Reader and import the .pdf file using File|Open.
What is the file type for the two other "text" documents? If .pdf, do the same as above. If .doc or .txt you should open with Word, Wordpad or Notepad.
There are .pdf documents that do require a newer version of Reader. If you are running anything higher than Win98FE you should be able to install Reader 6. Guess you know you get it at www.adobe.com.

The PDF subject is interesting, and I've been meaning to post about this.

I have full blown Adobe Acrobat version 5. I can make a pdf file out of any format, and anyone can view it, including people who have version 6 readers or reader/writers. With ver 5, I can seem to open any pdf, no matter what software created it, including ver 6 AA, or the "New Guys in Town ".

I have the update to go to Version 6, but have not installed it, because of the inconvenience to people who have not yet updated their AA readers. There is a known "problem" of not being able to open pdf files created by AA ver 6 UNTIL the reader is updated to version 6. I wonder if the competition, pdf995 and pdf fine print forced Adobe into rethinking their proprietary strategy? If so, they botched it.

Jeane, one thing I wanted to mention. It is possible that the pdfs you were trying to view were corrupted when they were posted to the website? Send an email to the webmaster, because he or she may not know that the pdf isn't working properly. If the webmaster is using ver 6, you can bet it's working fine on that end! But sometimes, the new AA ver 6 pdf files don't agree with the other software, and occasionally there is nothing but gobbletygook on the other end. If this is just an isolated problem on one website, that may be the problem. You could use another comp, or ask here for someone to try to view it.

(Incidentally, a pdf file is created from a "print" command, not a "convert ") It's kind of confusing explaining AA to new users!
