I have W 8.1 on 6 month old laptop. FF is constantly freezing up. I did not have this issue with XP on older laptop. FF is up to date.

Is this a FF issue or is there an issue with laptop?

Hi ceyermann, I too have a Notebook (purchased August 2013) running W8.1 and Mozilla FF & TB - no problems.
Have you Downloaded a fresh copy of FF and installed it? Neil.

ps. What AV are you using?

    tony,

I tried this and it worked for a few days. now back to hanging and crashing.

    Letting the script run longer

If you find that pressing the Continue button brings up the same dialog again, letting the script run longer won't help you; it will just make Firefox hang for longer. However, if you can use Firefox normally after pressing Continue, then the script may just needs extra time to complete.

To tell Firefox to let the script run longer:

In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
In the about:config page, search for the preference dom.max_script_run_time, and double-click on it.
In the Enter integer value prompt, type 20.
    Press OK.

Were you getting this message when FF would hang?

If you were not getting that message then don't change the script settings in about:config.

The Mozilla page I linked has the most common issues in order. The steps to take are in order. And this is the usual remedy to try first:

Could be an add-on or extension causing the problem.

Start FF in its Safe Mode:

At the top of the Firefox window, click the Help menu and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.... Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog.

Go the the sites where you get the script error and see what happens.

If no joy, this is what I would do:
Open Bookmark Manager and export my bookmarks as an html file.
Close FF > uninstall it, choosing to remove all user files and data.
    Reinstall FF.
    Import bookmarks.
