You need to use fdsk off a Win 98 or Me startup disk.

Beg, borrow or steal a Me or 98 startup disk :) - there is no fdisk in XP.

BTW - what do you want to do?

My father in law crashed his pc and he dosen't have any disks. It was windows 98 I think. I only have XP. It won't boot from the hard drive or the CDROM. I was hoping if the drive did not have a partition on it then the CDROM might boot. Just messing around with it. I told him that it should be replaced. I guess that is what he will do.

Fdisk and booting from CD ROM are distinct issues.

If the hard drive has only one partition, there is no need for any fdisk The XP CD ROM will reformat the drive in the installation process.

I don't know how to use the CD to remove partitions, so if you want to Fdisk for this chore, just go here:

    http://www.bootdisk.com/

Be sure you set the CD ROM into the correct boot seqence in the BIOS.

    Hello OLDSALTY,

Something to keep in mind about the two versions of fdisk. The XP version will not create a FAT32 partition greater than 32gigs, only the 9X version will do that.

If the file system to be created is NTFS, than use the XP version.

    Regards - Charles

One point to bear in mind - although you may be able to install your copy of XP to your father in law's computer you will not be able to activate it and the install will 'die' in 30 days or so.

That worked. Loaded from the floppy then booted from the CDROM. Everything is good now.

NTFS is the file system used by XP

    Pete
