I've got a hd which had been running on a linux machine which I've added to my windows box. Went into dos tried to run fdisk... found a primary and secondary partition with three logical partitions on the secondary.

Fdisk can't show me information on or delete the logical partitions so I can't figure out how to use any of the space on the secondary partition which is most of the hard drive.

Download Delpart.exe and add it to a Win98 start disk.

Start the computer from the Win98 start disk and run delpart.exe which will identify Your drives.
Delete any partition that You'd like to get rid of.

I would, as a precaution, disconnect the primary HDD for this operation. Then nothing can go wrong.

    Edited:

Came to think of that the tool is for removing NTFS partitions and I'm not 100% sure it will work on Linux partitions but I think so.

    Christer,

Thanks for the tip, it's all worked out now. Didn't realize this was a known problem with linux hd's - so now I know. :)

Not exactly a problem w/ the linux drives, but the problem is that windows fdisk cannot recognize and/or partition linux filesystems such as ext2 & 3.

    For future reference:
When encountering the same issue again you can boot from a linux install cd and run cfdisk, or a linux floppy w/ cfdisk on it. You can then delete the partitions and change the freespace to fat32. Then reboot & use windows fdisk.

Sorry I didn't explain. Yes I downloaded delpart.exe from the Texas guy's page - even sent an email thanking his boss like he asked... what a hoot. Added it to my W98 boot disk and it was real easy to use. Then went into fdisk and all was well. Now I have an extra 6 GB on my office network.
