fax server information cannot be retrieved

I had a problem with SP2 install, and I needed to do a repair install of SP1.

Now, I am unable to use Windows XP faxing. When I try to run the send fax wizard, I get the error message "fax server information cannot be retrieved" and the wizard closes.

I tried removing and reinstalling the fax printer in safe mode but it did not solve the problem.

I would be grateful for a solution.

 

Solution Found

I found the following solution to my problem regarding Windows XP Faxing not functioning properly:

Uninstall using Control Panel in normal mode.

Restart in Safe Mode and log in as Administrator, not regular user account even if with Administrator Privileges.

Run the Windows Setup from the CD. From the menu, invoke add Windows features. Select Faxing. Allow it to complete the install.

Restart in normal mode.

Go into \Start\Printers and Faxes\File\Set Up Fax

I then tried \Start\Printers and Faxes\File\Send Fax, and to my amazement and delight, it all worked fine.

I don't know if it made a difference, but when I was initially trying to trouble shoot this issue without getting positive results, I also turned on File Sharing for MSFAX by checking both boxes, and filing sharing is still on now that the above steps have solved the problem. This is the location of the MSFAX file:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax

I hope this solution works for anyone else in this predicament.
