Another new program for me. I've searched and read threads here on faxes. I'm still a bit confused on some points. Hope someone out there can help me.

I have WIN XP HOME and I just now installed the FAX program that came with it. I use a cable modem and my printer is a Lexmark 83 (scanner, printer and copier). If I understand some of the threads, I can use my printer to send faxes, but not sure how to do that. When configuring the FAX program, it mentions an internal modem which I won't be using because I have the external cable modem. I think I have to use my home phone # to receive faxes, but do I need it to send them? We occassionally need to send faxes, but don't really need to receive them. Can anyone walk me through a set up or test? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any help on this matter.

    :)

You must a regular dial up modem for the fax function to and from another fax machine.

There are "services" like www.efax.com where you send the fax to them with your dsl line and they fax it....it's not free.

Thanks, Steve. I was afraid of that. I was really hoping that I could at least fax OUT on the few occassions I need to. Guess it's back to using my insurance company's fax machine. (so far, no charge)

Panda - if you have a modem, why not split your phone line and run a cable to the modem. Or run the line into the modem and out to your phone. Most times the modem does nothing but if you want to send a fax, you can.

The only time I can see a drawback to using your regular phone line for a fax device is when you need to wait for an inbound fax. Then there is the issue of setting the fax machine to answer the phone (which will annoy your friends) or having a fax fail to get to you.

But for sending, not a problem.
