    Hi,
I have a pentium 3, 800 mhz. I have a 56K fax modem (pci). I don't know why but everytime when I am connected to the internet the fax modem tells me that I am connected @ 28K or 32K. What is wrong with my modem? ... I checked under modem properties and the speed was set to 115200, I changed that to 57600 and still is giving me the same speed? .. What do I do to be running my modem to 56k? Do I need to buy a new one? .. I have lucent fax modem card.
My server is earthlink and they have theirs @ 56k o more I don't remember. I know for sure that they dont have a 32k modem.

    Thanks for you help!
    Ben

Your connection is determined by not just the speed of your fax/modem but also the speed of the receiving machine, you can't connect any faster than the slower of the two. Phone lines also factor in but this is more likely a case of connecting to slower machines, especially if they are actual fax machines as opposed to computers with a fax program.

Oops, just reread your post, it could very well be the phone lines that are slowing you down.

I agree, a noisy phone line will keep the connection speed down. It may not be limited to just your phone line, it could be the phone system in general. You could try running a line direct to the Network Interface Box outside and see if it clears up.
You will have problems getting the phone company to clear this up. If you do call them, do not mention modem problems, tell them you have fax machine problems. For some reason this is more important to them, such as long distance charges.
It took me a few months when I had slow connections, and disconnects because of static. I have at this moment a 54666 connection.

I do not know what brand of machine but I assume that you are using XP.

My Son in Law has a BRAND NEW HP machine with a lucent fax modem card in it and it would not connect any higher than 28.8.

I disabled the Internal, plugged in the old ( actually ANCIENT ) USR 56K external, XP grabbed it, used the same phone line, same ISP and BINGO !!. 53.3 on FIRST try.
