I'm using win95 (osr2) and Internet Explorer 5.0. My favorites list is not in alphabetic order. I tried to find a utility pgm on the net and found ones that do everything but this. I even created a new favorites folder and named it "1a<folder name>" in order to have it show at the top of the favorites list. Well this worked but the next day is appeared somewhere else in the list. I'm working on a small essay and have many web sites i need to draw upon and refer to, so I need this list, which I've put in single folder, at my finger tips for easy access.
My "existing" favorites list is very long and to access my "new favorites folder" is a great inconvenience having to scroll every time i need to access it.
    thanks
    Greg
any pgms out there to do this, shouldn't Explorer have this simple feature?

Don't know about older versions but IE5.5 and UP...right click on the favorite and select sort by name.:)

right click feature not available w/IEv5.0

Thanks for the response. Right click only offers "close" option. But I had V5.5 some time ago and did not have the need to alphabetize my favorites at that time. I down graded to V5.o because of quirky operation of v5.5. Others tell me that they do a complete hard drive format once a year to clean up accumulated bugs etc., which may have cleared up IE 5.5's quirkyness. I may upgrade to v5.5 anyway, but just installed something called LinkStashBookmarks. I'm going to give it a try. I've always felt that add-ons are not the way to go and intergrated features are best, which by the way may serve as an indictment of Microsoft's efforts to stave off others by protecting their code. In other words, why hasn't another software maker created an integrated feature to IE such as the one I'm looking for. (oops!, I ended a sentence with a preposition and broke a grammatical rule, -who cares!)
    thanks
    Greg

You can use the following as a "trick" to get what you want, to some extent.

Create a new shortcut and paste the following in the command.

    C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,c:\windows\favorites

You can leave the shortcut on the desktop or drag it to the QuickLaunch bar.
This will now open Explorer in the favorites folder which you can now sort in what ever order you wish.

    favorites aphabetic order

Thanks for the command line! Not sure what the quicklaunch bar is? Is it the upper part, when the "start" button is clicked? But I have two more questions if u don't mind. What do the command line switches mean, ie., the "n" and the "e ".
And, is it possible to launch only the favorites folder and not the full tree structure?
I almost forgot this one that has been a real nuisance... My "start/programs" list is three columns across my desktop. Items in the third column on the right that have a "fan out," appear on the left side of the screen. When i move the mouse to the left to select the fanned out items all the columns close-out and i cannot get to them. PCs at my job do not have this problem. The columns stay put until i get my mouse over to the left. Just thought I'd throw this one in.. if u know why.. appreciate it
    thanks
    Greg

    The switches are defined here

    Try this for your solution:

Navigate to the Favorites folder > right click it and select "Send To Desktop As Shortcut" > drag the resultant Desktop shortcut to the Quick Launch bar. By default, the Quick launch bar is located on the Task Bar adjacent to the Start Button. If you don't see it there, right click an open area of the Task Bar and go to Toolbars > Quick Launch and click on it.

Re: Your start menu, I would suggest a re-organization.

All of these items are just shortcuts.

From Explorer, browse to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Here you will see the layout of the Start menu.

I would suggest doing something along the lines of creating subfolders and putting all the programs there that are similar.

Eg: Graphics, Tools, Games, Genealogy, etc.

Then, just drag and drop the items from their current position into one of the new folders that you created.
