    A couple of weeks ago I ran Windows XP Home Edition Setup to do a repair which worked fine. However since then, when starting Windows I am getting a black screen with Windows XP Home Edition Setup as the default option. If I want to start Windows normally I have a few seconds to scroll up to the normal start option. It is quite annoying. The boot order is set to start with the hard drive. There is no disc in the CDROM tray. Any thoughts how I can switch back to a normal start up procedure and get rid of the Windows Setup option?

    This is a sign XP did not finish some part of install.

    But if you can bypass it and all is well do the below.

    Control Panel

    System

    Advanced tab

    At bottom

    Startup and Recovery
    click settings

    At top "Default Operating system "

    click the Edit

    Get rid of the line that references Windows setup.

    If it is not clear which line to delete do not do it.

    Get back to us.

    I removed the last line which referred to Windows XP set up. It didn't quite work. When booting up I am getting just plain "Windows" as default option which progresses to the Windows XP set up screen. I still have to scroll up to Windows XP Home Edition in order for Windows to start up normally.

    This is the current boot.ini text:
    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=5
    Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
    [Operating Systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    Hmmm

    Are you comfortable that windows is running OK?

    Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT

    Edit paste or change the above line to the below line!

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

    Let me know!

    Mike,
    Thanks! It's working. No further problems with starting Windows.
