    Hello to all,

I am back with yet another problem that needs fixing!

When trying to shut down my computer (via the start>shutdown>shutdown) my computer goes through everything seemingly just fine (shows the screen "Windows is now shutting down ") but then that nasty blue screen comes up with the error message "a fatal exception 0d has occured at 0327: 00002D12 the current application will be terminated......." If I choose the "enter" option the screen will change to one with a black background with small dots covering the screen and at that point I can't even do a ctr+alt+del to reboot! So I hold in the power button to shut it off.

Starts back up just fine and everything else seemingly works okay, just won't let me shut it down!

I have tried searching the web and this BBS (to the best I know how) on fatal exception messages with the "0d" but have not had much luck! Can any one steer me in the right direction on how to fix this nasty problem?

Using Win98, IE/OE5.5, NAV2001 and I believe I have all the current updates on these.

    Any suggestions on a possible fix would be greatly appreciated! {Please keep in mind my beginner status :) }

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

    Hi Vicki
I'm just going to take a wild guess......
Have you gone to run......then typed in: msconfig Click ok......then look under the start up tab, for Fast Shutdown? If it's there. Uncheck it.

    That helped but....

Thank you, Daizy for offering that suggestion. I did check the "disable fast shutdown" and the fatal exception error disappeared (replaced with the "its now safe to turn off your computer) but I do miss my fast shutdown! :(

But now I have encountered yet another problem (does it ever end?? ). Now if my telephone rings while the computer is shut down, the computer will automatically start up!! This has never happened before, but will do it everytime now when the computer is off and the phone rings. (I only have one line that I use for my phone and the computer.)

Any ideas on where I should look to fix this one??

I truly appreciate all the help that is offered on this BBS!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

    Hi Vicki
You're going to have to go into your power management in your BIOS settings and look for something like 'Wake on LAN' or 'Wake on Ring' or other similar settings. And disable it.
When the computer starts (depending on the computer) press the Del key (could be the F1 key or something else) on the first couple of screens, before windows starts to load, to get into your bios.

Thank you, Daizy, for telling me that this problem can be fixed! I am sorry to say though, that I do not completely understand on how I am to correct it. I do know how to get my computer to start get to the several choices/options (before Windows loads), but I do not know where to look/what to do to/how to get into "your power management in your BIOS settings" in order to do any disabling of that wake thing.

Could you guide me a little further?

Thank you for taking the time to try and help me with this problem!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

When your computer is first turned on, if it's a Compaq or a Dell or HP you will see a splash screen with the makers logo. Sometimes hitting the Esc key will make that go away and you can see what going on behind it and at the bottom of the screen it will tell you what key to hit to enter setup. That's the key you want to use to get into the BIOS but you have to hit the key while it still shows in the bottom left corner of the screen. Once in BIOS you can look around using the arrow keys.

If you don't show a splash screen when you first turn on the computer just look in the lower left hand corner of the screen for what key to hit. In most cases it will be Del.

Thank you Kevin, your explanation on how to get to the "bios" screen really helped! Just another part of this technical machine that I never knew existed! :)

I was able to use the ' "Esc" key to get to that screen (I have a IBM computer but using that key also worked) so was able to find the power management section and disabled the "wake on LAN" feature. I haven't actually tested it yet, but hopefully that will take care of the problem(s) now!

Thank you all again, and I will post back with the final outcome!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

Rats, I was really hoping that would work, but no luck! My computer still starts up after the phone rings! Any other suggestions on what I should do or where I can look?

Thanks again for trying to help with this annoyance!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki
