Go to Device Manager. Under the heading Sound, video and game controllers, there should be a listing Wave Device for Voice Modem. Highlight and uninstall that listing. When you reboot and the New Hardware wizard runs, direct it to the drivers CD that came with the modem.

If you continue to have problems you should uninstall and physically remove the old modem if it is an add-in card. If it is built into the motherboard, you should go into the BIOS/configuration settings at startup and disable it.

Unless somebody can spot the direct cause I might try to give you some general information and you could use that to investigate.

You uninstalled the old modem, after that try uninstalling the Wave Device for Voice Modem again and also running the driver installation program for the new modem again. My guess would be that Windows is using the wrong set of drivers for that device.
Now that the old modem and it's software has been removed you may need to uninstall the software for the new modem, reboot then install it again (if the Add Hardware wizard runs at startup, click Cancel, then run the drivers installation CD when you get to the desktop).
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Fax Talk program when the modem drivers have been installed "correctly ".

Check the basics, look in the volume settings (there should be an System Tray icon or look in Help and Support). Check that the output may be set to "mute" or the controls at minimum. Does the Fax Talk program have volume controls?

The Fax Talk program should have a manual, you may find it in the folder where it is installed (something like C:\Program Files\Fax Talk). Try to find if it has an explanation of Error (-1) and which driver has the error. Is there a website for the Fax Talk program where you may find FAQs and an explanation of the error message? Is it part of the Hiro installation? Look on the CD for information or manuals.

I thought resetting the Wave Device would be the answer, if not, you will need to start resetting the other major drivers.

Maybe also look at updating the drivers for your soundcard. Run dxdiag, go to Start -> Run and enter dxdiag. It will give you information and tests for the various multimedia devices.
