    Hi Mike,
My opinion is "NONE = ALL "; i.e,, any recent one of good quality will do. Personally wouldn't spend over approx. $50 each, and if you can afford AMD X2, would go that way. Get the slowest over !+ GHZ.

Be careful that the motherboard specifications say that Win 98 is supported. I know nVidia (the chipset manufacturers) are no longer supporting it, which means you may not find drivers available.

If you keep the system lean (minimal startup/background processes) it will fly.

There is a limit to the processor for windows 98 se
It is 2 gig i believe
I was doing a work around in installing xp on a laptop
The laptop gave a specific error on installing win 98se
Turned out it referred to a 2 gig max cpu
Pentium 4 era computers were optimized for xp
Pentium 3 - perhaps might be a good ( and inexpensive choice)

If my memory cells haven't all been destroyed and are still functioning, Win 98 First Edition (FE) was limited to a 2.1 GHZ processor. Win98 SE had no such restriction. I had no problems running Win98 SE on my overclocked AMD Athlon XP 2400+ system.
