Ive been looking at getting a Fanless CPU cooler from quietpc.com for my Athlon XP 2400 (2GHz) Processor.

The PSU has a large 120mm fan directly above where the Heatsink would be so that would do the fanning.

The site says that the fanless ones are for low - medium loading but im generally always at 100% as i do AV things and have SETI@home running using whatever processor capacity isnt being used.

Suerly if i even direct the PSU intake coming through the "fanless cooler" the airflow would be sufficiant with the large cooler to take 100% load.

I had also looked at the "flower cooler ".... are these good?

    Thanks,
    Stuart.

You would need to monitor the CPU temperature like a hawk to avoid damage under all expected load situations as well as ambient room temperatures from winter to summer. Personally I think all CPU's since the 2,3 and 486 days will benefit from assisted cooling on a heatsink directly above the CPU. A quiet CPU fan should be barely noticeable above the PSU fan.

Be very carefull with reducing cooling fans. Even Apple have gone a bit quiet on fanless cooling since the "Cube" days. ;)

I was not going to comment, since I know little about them, some thoughts though would be that even though the PSU fan is close to the heatsink, it is at the "end" of the case, so all the other hardware will have outputed their heat by that point. The "extraction" of fan will be drawing air from the whole general area (there is a general low pressure area on the intake side of the fan) it does not draw air in a straight line. A heatsink/fan combination actually pushes air directly through the fins.

I am not certain of which model it would be, but it probably one of the last of 1.8 micron die chips and so would be one "hottest" running models. AMD had (has) an "approved" list of heatsink/fans, I doubt there would not be any fanless types on it, especially a low-medium type (you see a heatsink/fan marketed with "AMD Approved ").

Seti@home will keep it constantly hot as well.

    I don't think I would try it.

    Thanks, all usefull stuff.

What about the flower coolers... the ones with the pretty fins. U still have a fan, an 80mm one. Are these ok with heavy loading?

    Thanks again :)

Maybe start at the other end (you may find yourself in the middle somewhere).
    AMD Athlonâ„¢ Processor Thermal Solutions
The listings are out of date. Suggest you go to the manufacturers website and find an "approved pretty one" :D .
